Some places just feel like they were built for pure joy. Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como in Italy is one of those spots. It opened its doors in 1910 with the idea of making guests happy, and it’s still doing a fantastic job over 100 years later. Even now, it’s almost always full, with rooms starting at quite a bit of money, especially when it’s busy. I wanted to see if a hotel could really be worth such high prices, and after staying there, I get it. It’s a place where you can truly live ‘La Dolce Vita,’ the sweet life.
Amazing Lake Views
One of the biggest draws is the incredible view of Lake Como. It looks like a postcard with the Grigne mountains in the background. Many rooms have balconies facing east, so you wake up to see the sun rise over the mountains and the lake. It really makes you feel like you’re somewhere special. The hotel even has giant windows on the first two floors facing east so you can get the best views from inside.
Timeless Decor
They told me staying here would feel like home, but it’s more like stepping into a beautiful home from a different era. The halls have soft red carpets, gold walls, and are filled with old European art and fancy cabinets. It all comes together in a way that mixes the style of the early 1900s with bright Italian flair. It makes you feel like you’re in a scene from an old movie, maybe like in The Great Gatsby or on the Titanic.
Luxurious Room Touches
The rooms here are very nice. They range from comfortable Park View rooms to big Penthouse suites with huge balconies. I stayed in a Lake View room, which had a big bed, a marble bathroom, soft velvet chairs, and a private balcony looking out at the lake. You notice the small things that make it feel special, like leather holders for the remote controls and a jewelry box in the safe. The lighting is soft, making the rooms feel cozy and warm. Even after room service arrived, someone checked in to make sure I had everything I needed. It shows a real attention to detail.
A Wonderful Spa Experience
When you stay here, you get to use the T-spa, which is in an old villa. They give you fluffy white robes to wear, and you can explore the different spa areas. There’s a Turkish bath, a Mediterranean steam room, and a Finnish sauna with even more lake views. You can also relax in quiet lounges made of stone. If you want to treat yourself, you can book massages, facials, and other spa services.
Pools with Views
There’s an indoor infinity pool that feels like it blends right into the lake. It’s a stunning place to swim, and you can enjoy the scenery from the water. Imagine floating in a pool while looking out at the beautiful lake and mountains – it’s truly relaxing.
Facilities for Everyone
No matter what you’re in the mood for, this hotel has something for you. You can wander through the beautifully kept gardens in the back, or go for a swim in the Flower Pool hidden away in the park. At the front of the hotel, there’s a private beach with comfy loungers and even a floating pool with its own bar and restaurant. For those who like to stay active, there’s a gym in a traditional Italian building next to the spa. And with five restaurants and bars on site, you’ll never run out of places to eat. The room service is also top-notch.
The Best Buffet Breakfast
The breakfast buffet here takes things to a whole new level. In true Italian style, there’s a whole table dedicated to cheese – thirteen different kinds! You can find buffalo mozzarella, brie, parmesan, and local aged cheeses. The buffet also has a wide selection of meats, eggs, bacon, freshly baked pastries, fruits, juices, cakes, and coffee. You can enjoy all of this while looking out at the lake. It’s a morning meal that feels truly decadent.
Friendly Faces Everywhere
One of the subtler things I loved was how friendly all the staff were. From the gardeners to the waiters and maids, everyone greets you with a genuine smile. It never feels like they’re bothering you; it just makes you feel so welcome. It’s a small thing, but it really makes a big difference to your stay.
Option to Rent Entire Villas
If you’re looking for the ultimate private experience, you can even rent out one of the hotel’s historic villas. There’s Villa Sola Cabiati, a 16th-century residence with its own staff, and the newer Villa Passalacqua. Renting Villa Sola Cabiati can be quite expensive, but it means you have a whole aristocratic home to yourself. We were treated to a beautiful candle-lit dinner in the marble foyer of Villa Sola Cabiati, with opera music playing. It was an unforgettable evening.
A Taste of Culinary History
For food lovers, there’s something truly unique here. The hotel is home to La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi, the only restaurant in the world that serves the famous dishes of the late Gualtiero Marchesi, who many consider the father of modern Italian cuisine. You can try dishes like rice with edible gold and saffron, or veal fillet with foie gras. It’s a chance to experience culinary art that has changed Italian cooking.
Planning Your Visit
Thinking about visiting Lake Como in 2026? Grand Hotel Tremezzo offers a perfect blend of stunning scenery, historical charm, and exceptional service. It’s a place that truly lives up to its reputation for luxury and comfort. The rooms are beautiful, and the attention to detail is evident everywhere you look. Whether you’re enjoying a meal with a view or relaxing by the pool, you’ll feel well taken care of.
What are the room options?
There are many room types to choose from, each offering its own unique charm and views. You can select from Park View, Lake View, Historic Suites, and Rooftop Suites, with prices varying based on size and location. Some rooms even offer exceptional balcony space with stunning vistas.
The hotel also offers incredibly luxurious villa rentals for those seeking the utmost privacy and exclusivity. These historic villas provide a truly opulent experience, often complete with dedicated staff to cater to your every need, making for a memorable celebration or a very special getaway.
What kind of food can I expect?
From a lavish buffet breakfast featuring local cheeses and freshly baked goods to fine dining experiences, the hotel caters to diverse tastes. You can enjoy meals with breathtaking lake views, explore traditional Italian cuisine at one of its restaurants, or savor unique dishes at La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi, a tribute to a culinary pioneer. Room service is also available for a private dining experience in your accommodations.
Are there activities for families?
While the hotel offers a luxurious experience, it can certainly accommodate families. Children can enjoy the pools and gardens. A family visit from Boston meant that Michael and I could share in witnessing our kids, Lily and Ethan, marvel at the vastness of the lake and the beautiful surrounding landscape. It’s these shared moments that make travel so special, especially when they happen in a place as magnificent as this. Seeing their wonder turned the already beautiful views into something even more magical.
What is the best way to get there?
The hotel is about an hour’s drive from Milan, making it easily accessible by car. You can arrange transfers or rent a car to explore the region. The scenic drive itself is part of the experience, winding through picturesque towns and along the lake’s edge, offering glimpses of the stunning Italian countryside.
When is the best time to visit?
The hotel is popular year-round, but peak season, often during the European summer, can see higher prices and fuller occupancy. Considering the weather and crowds, spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors, allowing for a more tranquil experience. Each season offers a different kind of beauty around Lake Como, from the blooming flowers in spring to the rich colors of autumn.
What makes the spa special?
The T-spa offers a comprehensive wellness experience within a historic setting. Guests can enjoy various thermal experiences like steam rooms and saunas, many with direct lake views. The spa also provides a range of treatments designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. It’s a dedicated space to unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the resort, making it a perfect complement to a day of sightseeing or simply lounging by the lake.
This hotel truly is a place that focuses on making your stay memorable. It’s a beautiful blend of history, luxury, and incredible natural beauty, creating an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
