Immersive Music in Historic Settings
A City Transformed by Sound
Umbria Jazz unfolds across Perugia, where historic piazzas, galleries, and theaters become stages for a dazzling array of musical talent. It’s a festival that truly immerses you in its surroundings, with music filling the air from midday until late at night. Imagine strolling through charming alleyways and stumbling upon a lively jazz performance, or finding yourself in a grand piazza listening to a soulful melody.
Diverse Venues, Unique Experiences
The festival utilizes Perugia’s beauty to enhance the music. The large Arena Santa Giuliana hosts the biggest names, offering a grand spectacle. For those who prefer more traditional jazz, the Teatro Morlacchi is the place to be, presenting purist performances. If you’re seeking something more intimate and experimental, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria provides a sophisticated backdrop for chamber jazz.
Outdoor stages like Piazza IV Novembre and Giardini Carducci are perfect for enjoying popular genres such as soul, blues, and swing in a relaxed atmosphere. For a truly late-night experience, the Secret Bistrot offers jam sessions that extend into the early hours, keeping the jazz spirit alive until dawn.
More Than Just Music
Exploring Umbria’s Cultural Heritage
Following the music at Umbria Jazz is a fantastic way to explore Perugia’s historic center. You can wander through its ancient streets, discover hidden alleys, and visit its numerous churches, museums, and monuments. The festival’s unique approach of juxtaposing contemporary music with these historical settings creates a truly memorable experience.
My family and I loved how easily we could combine sightseeing with attending concerts. Lily, my seven-year-old, was fascinated by the old buildings, and Ethan, at four, was delighted by the street parades. It made exploring the city so much more engaging for them.
Culinary Delights of Umbria
No trip to Italy is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Umbria Jazz offers plenty of opportunities to do so. Throughout the old town, you’ll find restaurants offering delicious Umbrian food. You can enjoy meals before or after concerts at venues near the Arena Santa Giuliana, or savor aperitifs at places like the Priori Secret Garden. The Terrace also transforms into a “swing bar” with live music, providing a perfect setting for an evening drink.
For a more casual experience, the food area at Giardini Carducci is open from noon until late, conveniently located near stages for free concerts. It’s a great spot to grab a bite while soaking in the festival atmosphere.
Activities for All Ages
Educational Opportunities for Musicians
For aspiring musicians, Umbria Jazz provides exceptional learning experiences. The Berklee College of Music of Boston holds its clinics in Perugia, offering students from around the world a chance to hone their skills with renowned faculty. This marks the 37th edition of these esteemed music seminars.
Additionally, the festival partners with the Conservatory “Francesco Morlacchi” to promote jazz education at the highest levels. You can catch performances by students and professors from the conservatory’s jazz courses, showcasing emerging talent within this prestigious institution.
Discovering New Talent and Young Audiences
The festival actively supports emerging artists through initiatives like the Conad Jazz Contest. This competition provides a platform for young bands, aged 18-28, to perform and potentially launch their careers. It’s a wonderful chance to witness the future of jazz while discovering new sounds.
UJ4KIDS (Umbria Jazz for Kids) is a dedicated program designed to introduce children and families to the world of jazz through games, creativity, and interactive activities. Held in the garden area of the Arena Santa Giuliana, this program, now in its sixth year, aims to foster musical culture and a love for jazz from an early age.
My husband Michael and I found UJ4KIDS to be a lifesaver. While we enjoyed the evening concerts, the kids loved the fun, interactive sessions during the day. Ethan, especially, enjoyed the music and movement activities themed around jazz.
College Bands and Jam Sessions
A long-standing tradition at Umbria Jazz is the presence of college and high school big bands, not just from the USA but globally. These orchestras bring a spirit of cultured amateurism to the festival, performing in the squares and offering a glimpse into the training grounds for future professional jazz musicians. It’s heartening to see entire university bands like the Utah State University Jazz Band and the University of Montana Jazz Band sharing their talent.
The midnight club at the Secret Bistrot revives another historical tradition: the late-night jam sessions. With a resident band led by saxophonist Piero Odorici, these sessions invite all musicians present at the festival to join in, creating a spontaneous and exciting atmosphere for jazz enthusiasts who want to keep the music going.
