See Star Wars Unlimited Premiere in Lucca

Lucca, Italy becomes a hub of creativity and fandom from November 1st to November 5th with the return of Lucca Comics & Games. This massive festival, now in its 30th year celebrating gaming and nearly 60 years of history across various arts, embraces the theme “Together” this year. It draws hundreds of thousands, offering a truly unique experience. I was eager to explore it, especially with so many major players like Netflix, Hasbro, and Riot Games involved.

Gaming’s Grand Anniversary

A significant highlight for me was the celebration of Magic: The Gathering’s 30th anniversary. It’s incredible to think how long this trading card game has been around. This year’s festival is honoring that milestone with a special focus. The CEO of Wizards of the Coast, Peter Adkison, was there to present the Italian premiere of a documentary titled “Igniting the Spark, The Story of Magic: The Gathering.”

For dedicated fans of the game, the Palazzo Arnolfini hosted an exhibition that was a visual treat. Walking through, you could feel the game’s rich history. Alongside the exhibition, Magic Alley brought together over 16 Magic: The Gathering artists. Seeing their work up close gave me such an appreciation for the art behind the cards.

Netflix’s Italian Debut

Netflix made a big splash this year, setting up a dedicated space in Piazza Anfiteatro. It felt like stepping directly into some of their most popular series. I was particularly excited to be one of the first to see the initial episodes of “SUBURRÆTERNA,” a new series expanding the “Suburra” universe.

The atmosphere in Piazza Anfiteatro was electric, especially with actor Giacomo Ferrara stopping by. He plays Spadino in the series, and meeting him before the show’s release was a real treat. It made the experience feel so much more personal and engaging.

Another major Netflix presentation was the first episode of “All the Light We Cannot See.” Even though the main cast wasn’t present, the director, Shawn Levy, has such an impressive track record with shows like “Stranger Things.” Knowing the caliber of talent involved, from the director to the cast including Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie, made this screening a must-see event.

⚡ Quick Tips

  • Arrive early for popular Netflix premieres at Piazza Anfiteatro to secure a good spot.
  • Check the festival schedule for specific meet-and-greet times with actors like Giacomo Ferrara.
  • Be prepared for large crowds, especially around highly anticipated content screenings.

Dungeons & Dragons and Beyond

The festival truly embraced the world of role-playing games, with Joe Manganiello serving as this year’s US international ambassador. His involvement brought a significant focus to this sector. It was fascinating to see how the festival highlighted the role-playing experience.

The Grog Live Show featured a memorable clash between Lillo, Lucca Games’ historic mascot (designed by Karl Kopinski this year), and Joe Manganiello playing Arkhan the Cruel. It was a playful and entertaining encounter that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. It added a fun, theatrical element to the gaming focus.

Exploring the Historic Walls

For anyone interested in live-action role-playing, The Citadel on the walls of Lucca offered a unique experience. I loved the idea of interactive events set against such a historic backdrop. There were sparring demonstrations and even courses on Renaissance-era swordsmanship.

These courses were hands-on and free to book in person, adding a really accessible element to the historical reenactments. Throughout the festival, The Citadel provided a continuous stream of interactive games, shows, and entertainment.

Star Wars and Card Games Galore

A major draw for trading card game enthusiasts was the premiere presentation of “Star Wars: Unlimited.” Developed by Fantasy Flight Games, this brand-new game set in the Star Wars universe generated a lot of buzz. It’s slated for a March 2024 launch, but the opportunity to play it firsthand at Lucca was a huge advantage.

Attendees who played the game at the Carducci Pavilion could also snag two exclusive “Star Wars: Unlimited” promo cards. For me, it was the perfect chance to get a sneak peek at a highly anticipated game and to connect with other fans.

The Heart of the Exhibits

The Carducci Pavilion served as a central hub, housing over 150 exhibitors. It was a treasure trove for anyone interested in board games, miniatures, role-playing games, trading card games, and art. The sheer variety was impressive.

What really stood out was the “artist’s playground” performance area. Watching world-famous fantasy artists create their work live was truly mesmerizing. It’s not something you get to witness every day, and it offered a fantastic behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process.

Tribute to Tolkien

This year also marked the 50th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien’s passing, and the festival paid a thoughtful tribute to his enduring influence. The Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca hosted an exhibition called “Other Minds and Hands: JRRT50 in Time and Space.”

The exhibition featured original works by illustrator Angus McBride, which were stunning. A special guest for the Tolkien celebrations was Brian Sibley, a renowned expert on Tolkien’s works and Peter Jackson’s film adaptations. It was a beautiful way to honor such a significant figure in fantasy literature and gaming.

The Magical World of MinaLima

For fans of the Wizarding World, the MinaLima exhibit was an absolute highlight. Eduardo Lima and Miraphora Mina are the graphic designers behind the entire visual identity of the Harry Potter films, and their work was celebrated with a massive exhibition. It was housed in a beautiful, disused church, which added a unique atmosphere to the display.

The range of props and graphic art on display was extensive, offering an in-depth look at the magic behind the movies. Seeing these iconic designs up close was a truly special experience, and I felt like I was right back in the heart of Hogwarts.

Electric Nights of Video Games

No pop-culture festival would be complete without a strong showing of video games, and Lucca Comics & Games delivered. Riot Games took over the Pala Tagliate to host their Riot Stadium, where some of the latest eSports finals were on display. I managed to catch some of the Red Bull Campus Clutch VALORANT finals, which was an intense competition.

The excitement continued with the VAL Off-Season tournament and the PG Nationals 2023 for League of Legends. It was impressive to see the top Italian teams compete. The Baolo Championship Series (BCS), Italy’s biggest LoL tournament, also showcased incredible talent from Italian content creators, making for some thrilling matches.

Beyond eSports, PLAION transformed the Casermetta San Paolino into Sonic’s home, celebrating “Sonic Superstars.” It was fun to see such an iconic character represented. I also had the chance to see Yu Suzuki, the creative mind behind many classic SEGA games, and Jean-Luc Sala, the Assassin’s Creed Mirage Art Director. Their presence added another layer of excitement for gaming fans.

Overall, Lucca Comics & Games truly lived up to its reputation, offering an unparalleled experience for fans of all genres. It was a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into worlds of fantasy, gaming, and art, surrounded by a community that shares the same passions. The festival beautifully wove together historical tributes and cutting-edge entertainment, making it an unforgettable visit.
