Italy offers so many beautiful places to explore, and I love finding unique spots that feel both special and a little off the beaten path. My recent trip focused on two distinct regions: the art-filled hills of Florence and the serene waters of Lake Como. It was a perfect blend of culture and relaxation, with some wonderful discoveries along the way.
Florence and Tuscan Charm
My exploration began in Florence, a city that truly lives up to its artistic reputation. I wanted to find accommodation that offered a sense of history with a modern touch. Numeroventi caught my eye; it’s set in a 16th-century palazzo but features interiors with clean, minimalist design. It felt like a stylish retreat after a day of sightseeing. The blend of old and new was quite striking.
Artisan Shopping Experiences
Beyond the famous galleries, I was keen to seek out local artisans. Florence has a rich tradition of craftsmanship that is still very much alive. I found some truly special places. Antica Occhialeria is where you can find beautifully made eyewear – it’s a testament to dedication and quality. For something a bit different, Moleria Locchi creates decorative drinking glasses and vases. The detail in their work is lovely. And for home decor, Castorina 1895 is a great stop for elegant wooden pieces. It was wonderful to see these skills being preserved and celebrated.
Culinary Delights in Florence
Food is always a highlight of any trip to Italy, and Florence did not disappoint. For a truly memorable wine experience, Enoteca Bruni boasts an incredible cellar, specializing in natural wines. It’s a fantastic place to discover new favorites. My husband Michael and I enjoyed a leisurely lunch here, and it felt like a real treat.
Day trip to Lucca
For a change of scenery, a day trip to Lucca, just a short journey west, is highly recommended. The city itself is charming, surrounded by impressive Renaissance walls you can cycle or walk along. For lunch, I’d suggest Giglio and its sister bistro, Gigliola, for a delightful meal. It’s a perfect way to experience the Tuscan countryside.
Lake Como Serenity
After the cultural immersion in Florence, I headed north to the stunning Lake Como. It’s a place of breathtaking natural beauty, with dramatic mountains meeting clear blue water. While Bellagio is popular, I found its crowds a bit overwhelming, so I focused on other areas.
Exploring Varenna and Its Gardens
A ferry ride along the lake is an absolute must-do. It offers constantly changing perspectives of the shore. I particularly loved stopping in Varenna. It’s a picturesque town with narrow, winding streets and colorful buildings tumbling down to the lake. The botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero are absolute gems. Wandering through them was so peaceful, especially in the gentle spring air. It’s the kind of place where you can just slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.
Villas and Resorts on the Water
Across the lake, the gardens of Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello are also worth dedicating time to. They offer incredible views and beautifully manicured landscapes. For accommodation, I heard wonderful things about Passalacqua in Moltrasio. It’s an 18th-century private residence transformed into a luxurious hotel, offering a sense of timeless glamour. It’s definitely a place to consider for a special occasion; bookings reopen in March, so planning ahead is key.
Family moments by the lake
Watching my children, Lily and Ethan, take in the vastness of the lake was wonderful. They were mesmerized by the ferries and the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. We found a quiet spot for a picnic overlooking the water, and it was a simple yet perfect family memory, surrounded by such natural splendor. It’s these quiet moments that I cherish most when traveling.
Vienna’s Cultural Riches
My travels also took me to Vienna, a city I associate with imperial history, classical music, and delicious food. I was eager to dive into its cultural offerings and enjoy its renowned culinary scene.
Museums and Art Collections
The Museumsquartier is an excellent starting point. It’s a complex that combines interesting architecture with a range of museums. I spent a good amount of time admiring the contemporary art, as well as the works of Austrian masters like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Across the way, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is home to an impressive collection, including the world’s largest assembly of works by Bruegel. For lovers of Impressionism and the Russian avant-garde, the Albertina Museum is a must-visit. The sheer amount of art in such close proximity is incredible.
Tastes of Vienna
To fuel my museum hopping, I made sure to sample some Viennese classics. Grabbing a käsekrainer (cheese sausage) from a street vendor is a quintessential Viennese experience – quick, tasty, and very satisfying. For a more formal meal, I highly recommend Skopik & Lohn. They serve traditional Viennese dishes with a modern, creative twist. Their wiener schnitzel with potato salad is truly superb. And of course, no visit to Vienna would be complete without enjoying its famous beer. The Neubau area, particularly around Zollergasse, offers a relaxed atmosphere with good music. Café Europa is a great spot, and a new bar-gallery called Atlas has also opened, adding another interesting option.
Exploring Vienna’s neighborhoods
Wandering through Vienna’s districts revealed its distinct character. The Museumsquartier itself is a hub of activity, but venturing into areas like Neubau provided a glimpse into local life. I enjoyed seeing how the historic architecture blended with modern cafes and shops. It felt like a city that respects its past while embracing the present.
Florence Revisited for Artisans and Food
Returning to Florence, I focused on experiences that offered a deeper dive into its artisanal heritage and culinary offerings. The city’s commitment to handcrafted goods is inspiring.
Discovering Local Craftsmanship
I made it a point to visit some of the specialized ateliers. Antica Occhialeria is a place that truly impressed me with its dedication to quality eyewear, each piece crafted with care. For unique home decor, Castorina 1895 offers beautifully made wooden items that felt both timeless and modern. It’s this kind of authentic craftsmanship that I always seek out.
Culinary Adventures
My evenings were often spent exploring Florence’s dining scene. Enoteca Bruni became a favorite for its exceptional natural wine selection, offering a chance to taste wines I hadn’t encountered before. It was a sophisticated yet unpretentious experience. My husband Michael enjoyed discussing the wine list with the sommelier, adding to the enjoyable evening.
A peaceful afternoon in Lucca
The day trip to Lucca remains a cherished memory. Cycling along the city walls offered a unique perspective. We stopped for a delightful lunch at Gigliola, enjoying fresh, local ingredients and the relaxed atmosphere. It was a perfect escape from the city’s intensity, allowing for a moment of quiet enjoyment of the Tuscan landscape. Even little Lily enjoyed the gentle pace.
Lake Como’s Tranquil Beauty
My time at Lake Como was all about soaking in the serene environment and exploring its picturesque towns and gardens.
Gardens and Lakeside Strolls
The botanical gardens were a highlight. Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero provided tranquil settings for peaceful walks, filled with stunning floral displays and lovely lake views. The sheer beauty of these places is quite remarkable. I found myself taking countless photos, trying to capture the serenity of it all.
Elegant Stays and Ferry Journeys
The ferry rides were not just about transportation; they were scenic tours in themselves, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The suggestion to stay at Passalacqua was a great one, representing the ultimate in lakeside luxury. While I didn’t stay there this time, it’s definitely on my list for a future visit. Imagine waking up to those views!
Family fun on the lake
Ethan, my youngest, was fascinated by the boats. We spent an afternoon simply watching them glide across the water. We also found a lovely spot for gelato by the lake, where the children could run around a bit. It was a simple pleasure, but seeing their joy against such a stunning backdrop made it feel extraordinary.
Italy always offers something new to explore, and these regions provided a wonderful mix of art, history, nature, and culinary delights. I hope this inspires your own adventures.
