Find Your Trulli Home in Sunny Puglia

Puglia, the sun-baked heel of Italy, offers a unique escape. It’s a region where life moves at a slower pace, marked by long seaside meals, olive oil tastings in ancient farmhouses, and the striking Baroque architecture of Lecce. The dual coastlines, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, mean you’re always close to a refreshing swim. Summer festivals add to the appeal, and the uncomplicated yet delicious food scene makes for a truly memorable trip. I found myself drawn to the region’s distinctive trulli, those fascinating beehive-shaped buildings. Originally, legend says, they were built to be easily dismantled to avoid taxes. Today, they’ve been wonderfully reimagined as unique hotels and holiday homes, often featuring whitewashed walls, curved ceilings, and outdoor bathrooms.

Unique Trulli Stays

Alberobello’s Scattered Village Experience

One of my favorite places to stay was in Alberobello, a town famous for its trulli. The Trulli Holiday Albergo Diffuso is a great example of the “albergo diffuso” concept, where accommodations are spread throughout the town. This means you can choose to be in a quieter spot on the outskirts or right in the lively center. Each trullo I explored had a simple, rustic feel with exposed stone and vaulted ceilings, usually decorated with nice antique furniture. The staff were incredibly helpful, arranging activities like hiking, wine tours, or even horseback riding for a fee. Breakfast was brought directly to my trullo, which was a lovely touch, and there was an on-site restaurant serving local Pugliese dishes.

What is an albergo diffuso?

An albergo diffuso is a type of hotel where rooms are located in various buildings throughout a town or village, rather than being in a single complex. It aims to integrate guests into the local community.

It felt like stepping into a storybook, especially with breakfast delivered right to my door each morning. We spent a lot of time exploring Alberobello on foot from our base, soaking in the atmosphere.

Modern Comforts in Locorotondo

For a different vibe, Trulli Nanni in Locorotondo offered a fresh, modern take on trulli living. Many trulli can feel a bit old-fashioned, but these apartments were bright and contemporary, decorated in calming earth tones with modern bathrooms and natural fabrics. It felt more like a boutique hotel. The garden and hot tub were shared, creating a nice communal feel. If you get the Girasole apartment, the views over Locorotondo are stunning. Even from other apartments, you catch glimpses of rooftops through fig, almond, and cherry trees, particularly beautiful at sunset. It’s about a ten-minute walk into town, though finding it by GPS can be a little tricky, so asking for directions is a good idea.

Is Locorotondo worth visiting?

Yes, Locorotondo is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, known for its distinctive circular historic center.

Michael and the kids really enjoyed the garden here, especially the hot tub after a day of exploring. Lily loved spotting the different trees.

If you’re traveling with a larger group, Trulli Inn Villa near Ceglie Messapica is an excellent choice. This renovated trullo has been transformed into a spacious, family-friendly villa. It boasts five bedrooms, two kitchens, and a fantastic private pool, making it perfect for a holiday with friends or extended family. The owners, Stefano and Olivia, are wonderful sources of local information, always ready with recommendations for restaurants, activities, and sights. Ceglie Messapica is renowned for its food culture, with a cooking school and some highly regarded restaurants, like Cibus, where reservations are essential.

Is Ceglie Messapica a good food destination?

Ceglie Messapica is known as the “gastronomic capital” of the Valle d’Itria, famous for its culinary traditions and excellent restaurants.

Chic Design in Cisternino

Borgo Canonica, located between Ostuni and Cisternino, is a restored rural village that showcases incredible design flair. It’s the passion project of local architects Aldo Flore and Rosanna Venezia. The borgo is made up of 42 trulli, which have been converted into 14 elegant rooms and suites. The spaces are simple and stripped back, featuring exposed stone, whitewashed walls, and handmade tiles. Once home to farmer-monks, this estate sits within 15 acres of olive groves, lemon trees, and lavender-scented shrubland. The central swimming pool is particularly stunning. You can also enjoy olive oil and wine tastings on-site, explore the sweet trullo wine bar, or take cooking classes using produce from the abundant kitchen garden. Hiking and bike riding are also popular activities.

What is a “borgo”?

A “borgo” in Italy refers to an old village, often historic and walled, typically found in rural areas.

The design here was so inspiring. I spent a lot of time sketching in the olive groves, and Michael enjoyed the wine tastings.

Poolside Relaxation near Martina Franca

Trulli Mirabello, near Martina Franca, offers a beautiful setting with eight slate-topped trulli cones standing beside the pool. It’s a great spot, close to the charming traditional town of Martina Franca. The property is set in a lovely garden with olive trees and summer blossoms, making it another good option for groups. It has four bedrooms and a large veranda perfect for alfresco dining. The interior stonework has been beautifully restored, and while some of the decor is a bit old-fashioned, it has a lot of character. The garden is a delightful place to enjoy a bottle of Martina Franca’s famous white wine, which comes in both still and sparkling versions.

What is Martina Franca known for?

Martina Franca is famous for its Baroque architecture, its own unique style of white wine, and its annual music festival.

We had some wonderful evenings dining al fresco on the veranda here. Lily and Ethan loved playing in the garden before dinner.

A Trulli Refuge in Alberobello

While Alberobello itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 1,600 trulli and can feel very busy, especially in high summer, Trulli Anti offers a peaceful escape. This cluster of three bedrooms and one deluxe suite has been carefully restored and is tucked away in the narrow lanes, away from the main tourist crowds. The rooms are simple, light, and neatly furnished, with access to outdoor space and a shared pool – which is quite rare in Alberobello. Although it can be crowded, Alberobello is definitely worth a visit, at least outside the busiest season, to experience its unique charm and ancient building techniques.

When is the best time to visit Alberobello?

The shoulder seasons, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), are often recommended to avoid peak summer crowds and enjoy pleasant weather.

It was so nice to have a quiet place to retreat to after exploring the busy streets of Alberobello. The pool was a big hit with the kids.

Authentic Masserie Experiences

Rustic Charm near Ostuni

Masseria Le Carrube, near Ostuni, is a fortified farmhouse that feels like a world away from the bustle. Despite its location at the foot of a hill, it offers a tranquil retreat. This property was once an olive oil mill, and it retains much of its rustic charm. However, its five spacious rooms, suites, and a small trullo have modern designs and are very well executed. Bougainvillea cascades through the courtyards, framed by lemon trees and cacti, creating a beautiful natural setting. The masseria emphasizes a plant-based philosophy, and its vegetarian restaurant is considered one of the best in the region. If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, its sister property, Borgo Egnazia, is about a 30-minute drive away.

Understated Luxury in Ostuni

Masseria Cervarolo, a 16th-century fortified farmhouse near Ostuni, stands out as a luxurious retreat. It offers a rare combination in Puglia: a luxury hotel with both restored trulli and boutique-style rooms that exude peace and comfort. The estate includes a frescoed chapel that was once a pilgrimage site, and a sense of stillness pervades the grounds. You’ll find whitewashed courtyards with cacti and bougainvillea, shady communal areas with comfortable daybeds, and a sparkling pool in a repurposed sinkhole. The owner, Patrizia Avellino, has lovingly updated Cervarolo, upcycling old farm objects throughout the 18 rooms and suites to create an earthy atmosphere. For instance, chunky wooden doors have been transformed into bedheads and tables, and old yokes are now lamps and racks. The on-site restaurant serves a set menu, and complimentary cooking classes and wine tastings are offered weekly.

Does Masseria Cervarolo offer activities for guests?

Yes, the masseria offers cooking classes and wine tasting experiences for guests to enjoy.

This place felt so serene and beautifully put together. We enjoyed the quiet pace and the beautiful surroundings. The kids appreciated the pool after a day of sightseeing.
