Lake Como can feel like stepping into a dream with its clear blue waters and charming towns. For 2026, planning your stay means choosing a hotel that truly captures the magic of this Italian gem. I’ve explored some of the most beautiful spots, and I’m excited to share my finds with you.
Waterfront Treasures
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
This hotel is truly a classic on Lake Como, and you can feel its history the moment you arrive. It was the very first hotel built here, and it’s easy to see why it’s so celebrated.
The grounds are stunning with lush gardens that lead down to the water. I particularly loved seeing the private boat marina, complete with vintage vessels. It felt like a scene from an old movie.
The views from the hotel are simply breathtaking, as Mary McCormack from Audley Travel also highlighted. It’s a perfect place for soaking in the lake’s beauty.
Dining here is also a memorable experience. La Terrazza offers fantastic dinners with an unforgettable backdrop. You can even enjoy a drink at the handsome, intimate hotel bar, which often has live music.
One of the most unique features is the pool that seems to float directly in the lake. The T Spa is another highlight, with a sauna offering a picture window that looks out to the water – pure bliss!
When Michael and I stayed here, he really enjoyed the attentive service, and I found myself drawn to the small touches, like products made by local artisans for the hotel.
Il Sereno
If you love modern design, Il Sereno is a must-see. It really redefined luxury when it opened a few years ago, offering a different vibe from the more traditional villas.
The design is sleek and contemporary, really letting the natural beauty of Lake Como shine. Every suite faces the lake and mountains, and each has its own private terrace, which is wonderful for morning coffee or evening drinks.
The spa, built in a former boathouse, is a true sanctuary. I enjoyed a wonderful massage there, with the lake just outside.
Cruising the lake on one of their custom-made wooden Ernesto Riva boats is an absolute must. It’s a stylish way to see the charming towns from the water.
For a family trip, Lily and Ethan would have loved the infinity pool suspended over the lake; it’s quite a sight!
Passalacqua
Stepping into Passalacqua feels like journeying back in time to an era of refined luxury. This historic villa, built in 1767, has been meticulously restored.
The gardens are an absolute showstopper, cascading down terraces to the lake shore. They are filled with azaleas, rhododendrons, and ancient trees – a true botanical wonder.
Each guest room is unique, decorated with a rich sense of Italian tradition and contemporary elegance. I found the mix of muted colors, floral patterns, and antique furniture incredibly appealing.
They offer wonderful experiences like a pasta-making class, which I think Michael would have thoroughly enjoyed. In the summer, they even have a cinema under the stars.
Boat tours on their private vintage houseboats, named Didi and Giumello, offer a truly special way to explore the lake.
Charming Stays for Every Traveler
Palace Hotel
The Palace Hotel offers a lovely blend of old-world Lake Como charm and contemporary style. It’s a fantastic choice if you’re looking for good value and a convenient location.
It’s located just steps from the train station in Como, making it easy to continue your travels elsewhere in Italy, like a quick trip to Milan.
The intimate setting provides a sense of privacy, and many rooms offer panoramic views of the lake and mountains. I especially appreciated the elegant details in the rooms, like the patterned hardwood floors and high, tufted headboards.
The garden bar is an absolute delight, perfect for a romantic evening. The bartenders are happy to whip up surprise cocktails, which is a fun touch.
Don’t miss the hotel’s restaurant, Antica Darsena. It serves classic Italian dishes and offers a well-priced tasting menu that’s perfect for couples.
Grand Hotel Menaggio
For families, the Grand Hotel Menaggio is a wonderful option. It’s a 4-star hotel that feels like a slice of luxury without breaking the bank.
It’s just a short walk from Menaggio Beach, making it easy to enjoy the lake’s waters. It’s also an ideal base for exploring the wider Northern Italian countryside, with wineries and nature trails nearby.
Pets are welcome here, which is great if you want to bring your furry friend along. Free Wi-Fi, housekeeping, and parking are also included, which are always welcome extras.
Lily and Ethan would have loved the outdoor pool, and the hotel offers various excursions and boat trips along the lake, perfect for keeping everyone entertained.
The hotel provides access to a fitness center and even nearby golf courses, offering something for everyone in the family.
Relais Villa Vittoria Lake Como
If you’re seeking tranquility and spectacular views, Relais Villa Vittoria is your spot. Perched on the western shore, it’s an intimate hotel with only 12 rooms.
The setting is incredibly serene, perfect for a quiet getaway. I highly recommend booking a lakeview room, especially one with a balcony, to fully take in the mountain and lake vistas.
Imagine sipping prosecco on the infinity pool deck while gazing at the scenery – pure relaxation. The gardens are also lovely for a peaceful stroll.
Dining at the hotel’s La Barrique terrace restaurant by candlelight is a romantic experience. You can also enjoy kayaking directly from the hotel, which is a fun way to connect with the water.
Even partial lake views from a suite balcony at this villa offer a chance to soak up the scene. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and enjoy the beauty of Lake Como.
Villa D’Este
For a truly regal experience, Villa D’Este is unparalleled. This iconic property has hosted royalty and celebrities for centuries, and its historical significance is palpable.
Located on the edge of Lake Como, the villa is surrounded by 25 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. Walking through them feels like stepping into a lavish estate from another era.
Each of the 151 rooms is uniquely decorated, featuring silk brocade drapes, period furniture, and original art. It’s a level of luxury that’s hard to match.
They offer some unique experiences, like self-drive Vespa outings for a fun way to explore the surroundings. For car enthusiasts, a Ferrari or Lamborghini driving lesson is also available.
The on-site Platano restaurant offers wine-centric dining, which is a treat for any wine lover. The hotel also hosts guest-only orchestral concerts, adding to its exclusive atmosphere.
Mandarin Oriental, Lago Di Como
If you’re looking for a rejuvenating escape, the Mandarin Oriental is the place to be. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century estate, it’s set against the backdrop of the Alpine foothills.
This hotel is perfect for those seeking wellness and relaxation. The spa offers a range of treatments designed to help you feel your best, including unique chakra balancing options.
You can also take advantage of outdoor yoga and tai chi classes, making the most of the beautiful natural setting. I found the thermal area and floating pool incredibly relaxing.
For a unique experience, try the Japanese-fusion restaurant Laria for dinner. The CO.MO Bar & Bistrot is also a great spot for aperitivo and after-dinner drinks with lovely views.
You can even purchase the bedding and spa products used in the hotel to bring that sense of calm home with you.
Hotel Villa Flori
Hotel Villa Flori offers a glimpse into old-world elegance with its 19th-century villa setting. It began as a wedding gift, adding a romantic layer to its history.
The property boasts 53 rooms, many featuring grand views and some with private balconies. You can still see many of the villa’s original details, like the stucco work, frescoes, and mosaic floors.
The private gardens are a highlight, adorned with marble statues and lush landscaping. It’s a beautiful place to wander and find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the romantic panorama of the lake.
For a special meal, Ristorante Raimondi offers delicious local and seasonal dining, especially lovely during moonlit evenings. They also have a top-floor spa with a sauna and Turkish bath for ultimate relaxation.
Customized bike tours are available, and I noticed they offer locally made silk items and indoor fragrances in the rooms, adding to the luxurious feel.
No matter what kind of stay you’re looking for, Lake Como offers incredible hotels that make the experience truly unforgettable.
