Italy offers countless famed islands, but sometimes the most rewarding experiences are found just off the beaten path. If you’re dreaming of sapphire waters and sun-drenched relaxation without the overwhelming crowds, consider a journey to a place that feels like a delightful secret waiting to be discovered. This island, a neighbor to a more celebrated neighbor, provides a genuine slice of Italian island life with a unique volcanic charm.
Volcanic Island Wonders Await
Our arrival marked the beginning of an unforgettable exploration of Ischia, a volcanic island in the Bay of Naples. Unlike its glitzy counterpart, Capri, Ischia offers a more laid-back atmosphere, rich with natural beauty and authentic local culture. It’s a place where dramatic landscapes meet therapeutic thermal waters, creating a truly unique vacation destination.
Discovering Baia di Sorgeto
One of the island’s most breathtaking spots is Baia di Sorgeto, a natural thermal-water beach. Reaching it involves a descent of approximately 200 steps, a journey that builds anticipation with every turn. As you descend, the Tyrrhenian Sea unfolds in stunning shades of green, a truly awe-inspiring sight.
The approach to the beach reveals a picturesque scene: a whitewashed building adorned with white umbrellas, set against the backdrop of shiny black rocks. People are seen relaxing in the water, appearing like tiny figures from a distance. This initial glimpse only heightens the eagerness to reach the shore and experience it firsthand. We paused at switchbacks, catching renewed views of the inviting scene, getting closer with each step.
What makes Baia di Sorgeto special?
Baia di Sorgeto stands out as Ischia’s most popular beach, heated naturally by its volcanic thermal waters. Here, the mountain slopes gently toward the sea, creating a unique environment where warm, steamy volcanic waters mingle with the cool sea. This natural fusion forms a series of pools nestled among the rocks, offering a blissful thermal bath experience.
The rocks themselves radiate a comforting warmth, creating a natural hot tub effect. Visitors often settle in for hours, their faces showing a serene contentment as they converse in various European languages. The water temperature here can reach 37 degrees Celsius and higher, providing a deeply therapeutic soak.
A Therapeutic Beach Experience
Stepping into the warm waters of Baia di Sorgeto felt both invigorating and deeply therapeutic. The sensation of being surrounded by naturally heated water while listening to the gentle lapping of the sea is truly remarkable. It’s an experience that rejuvenates the body and soothes the soul.
After a long, relaxing soak that left our fingers and toes wonderfully pruned, we retreated to a nearby terrace. There, under the shade of a white umbrella, we enjoyed refreshing glasses of local Biancolella white wine and Peroni beer. The conversation flowed easily as we reminisced about the incredible thermal experience, feeling incredibly fortunate to have found this hidden corner of Ischia.
Ischia: An Under-the-Radar Island
Ischia, a volcanic island with a circumference of about 34 kilometers, boasts a diverse landscape. Its interior is mountainous and covered in lush forests and vineyards, which cascade down to meet palm-fringed sandy beaches and charming towns with whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets.
For decades, the island has been a favorite escape for Italian tourists, primarily from the bustling city of Naples, just a short ferry ride away. However, other Europeans have begun to discover its appeal, drawn by its stunning natural beauty, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine, and, importantly, its authentic Italian island character.
Comparing Ischia and Capri
While Capri is renowned for its fashionable reputation and attracts throngs of visitors, Ischia offers a different kind of charm. Capri comes with its share of crowds and higher prices, a testament to its global appeal. In contrast, Ischia feels like a step back in time, offering a more relaxed and authentic “dolce vita” experience.
Ischia might not have the same polished veneer as Capri, but it more than makes up for it with its beautiful beaches, affordability, and the exciting sense of being an emerging destination. It’s an ideal alternative for those seeking a quieter, more tranquil Italian island getaway.
Finding Your Ideal Base
We chose to stay near Citara Beach, just outside the town of Forio. Our accommodation was a delightful whitewashed villa, rented through Airbnb, complete with a small pool and just a hundred meters from the sea. The villa offered a picturesque view overlooking olive groves leading down to the water.
Citara Beach proved to be an excellent location, with a convenient string of shops and restaurants nearby. The restaurants here are particularly noteworthy, offering stunning sea views and serving traditional Italian dishes with an Ischian twist, often featuring creative seafood preparations on pizzas and pastas.
Dining Delights on Citara Beach
Many of the restaurants also function as beach clubs, providing umbrellas and loungers on the sand, allowing patrons to seamlessly transition from dining to sunbathing. For sunset dinners, we especially enjoyed Il Galeone Lido Ristorante. For relaxed beach lunches, La Sirena Del Mare, with its whimsical mermaid signage enjoying spaghetti alle cozze, was a favorite.
Settling into our routine at Citara Beach was easy. Mornings were for leisurely sleep-ins, coffee, and breakfast with a view, followed by a dip in the pool. We’d then wander along the beach to find a lunch spot, spend the afternoon soaking up the sun, enjoy happy hour back at the villa, and return to the beach for dinner, savoring the local Ischian wine.
Exploring Beyond the Beach
While we enjoyed our established rhythm, we made time for excursions to explore more of Ischia’s offerings. A highlight was visiting Poseidon, located on Citara Beach itself. This expansive, beautifully landscaped thermal park is built up the mountainside, featuring eight naturally heated pools and four cold pools, designed for a progressive journey of relaxation and invigoration, all with spectacular views.
We also took time to explore the charming towns of Forio, Sant ‘Angelo, Ischia Porto, and Ischia Ponte. Wandering through their narrow streets offered a glimpse into the authentic Italian seaside life. A memorable trip involved trekking across the causeway to the island dominated by the hilltop Castle Aragonese at Ischia Ponte.
Castle Aragonese A Storied Past
The historic fort of Castle Aragonese is a truly impressive sight. Once a strategic vantage point for spotting incoming intruders, it now offers absolutely jaw-dropping views of the surrounding sea and coastline. The walk across the causeway itself is scenic, leading you to this ancient sentinel.
Our week on Ischia concluded with a departure that was bittersweet. Boarding the ferry, we felt like we had been let in on a closely guarded secret. Ischia is a destination that rewards those who seek it out, offering a genuine and beautiful Italian island experience.
If you’re planning a visit to this region in 2026, know that new flight options are making Ischia more accessible than ever. For instance, direct flights from Montreal to Naples are now available, simplifying your journey to this charming island.
For a truly authentic Italian island escape, consider Ischia. It’s a place where natural wonders meet local charm, offering a vacation experience that feels both deeply relaxing and wonderfully enriching. We hope you get the chance to discover its magic for yourself.
