You can find true Italian tranquility on the slopes of Mount Etna at Monaci delle Terre Nere. This unique estate blends organic farming, vineyards, and a luxury hotel experience with a strong focus on nature. It’s a place where the “black earth” of Etna truly defines the landscape and the relaxed atmosphere.
A Rustic Retreat Reimagined
Monaci delle Terre Nere is more than just a five-star hotel; it feels like a true escape into the countryside. Even though it’s a Relais & Châteaux member, the vibe is distinctly rustic. The grounds are designed to connect you with nature, using simple food made from homegrown ingredients. While there’s no gym or spa in the traditional sense, the lack of distractions allows you to truly slow down and appreciate the environment.
The place has a deliberate minimalism that might not suit everyone. If you prefer heavily manicured surroundings and highly polished service, this might not be your ideal spot. However, for those seeking a deeply relaxing experience connected to the natural world, it’s difficult to find a more fitting destination.
Private Spaces Designed for Nature
The accommodations at Monaci are spread across the 61-acre estate, feeling like individual worlds. There are 27 rooms, each with its own entrance, pathway, and a private garden space. These are housed in bungalow-style blocks, which are a mix of new constructions and renovated farm buildings. You can book individual rooms or an entire villa for more seclusion.
The design throughout is simple and rustic, with a strong emphasis on the garden views visible through large glass doors. The rooms feature minimalist four-poster beds and bathrooms that use tiles instead of marble. You’ll also find comfortable sofas and unique decorative items, like a glass-topped table with legs made from Etna stone. Every room includes outdoor space with sun loungers, where nature clearly takes precedence over human presence, with local wildlife a constant reminder of that.
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the hotel. Electricity and hot water are generated by solar panels, and cleaning products are biodegradable. The minibar is stocked exclusively with Sicilian products, including wine from the estate and dried fruits and nuts from nearby Bronte.
For those concerned about mobility, the scattered nature of the rooms is managed by staff who can transport you via golf carts. While the main building itself isn’t fully accessible, the furthest rooms are only a short drive away.
Farm-to-Table Delights
Food mileage is a major priority here, with an emphasis on ingredients sourced either directly from the farm or from around Sicily. The main restaurant, Locanda Nerello, is located on the first floor of the historic 18th-century building. Its terrace offers beautiful views down to the sea.
The menu is largely vegetable-focused and prepares dishes in a straightforward manner. Expect options like cod with lentils and chicory, or a parmigiana made with ingredients from the on-site garden. They even prepare a unique “soup” at your table that involves a herbal infusion poured over fresh vegetables.
During lunchtime, the dining experience moves to Luce, a poolside restaurant. The menu is similar, offering comfort food like meatballs and a wide variety of salads. The breakfast buffet, served in a pine grove during summer, features local cheeses, grilled vegetables, and freshly baked cakes and bread made from ancient grains like perciasacchi.
The Convivium Bar is a highlight for its “farm-to-table” cocktails. They creatively use organic plants, fruits, and herbs grown on the property to craft unique drinks. There’s also poolside bar service available throughout the day.
Finding Your Pace
While the hotel’s amenities might score a 7/10, its overall vibe is a perfect ten for those seeking a tranquil, nature-focused retreat. The pace of life here is deliberately slow. The hillside pool is beautiful, offering views towards the sea. Sunloungers are interspersed with fruit trees and olive groves, ensuring a sense of privacy.
Guests are generally left to enjoy the grounds at their leisure, with opportunities to walk through the estate and catch glimpses of Etna. This hands-off approach might feel a bit adrift for some, but for many, it’s precisely the appeal. You can participate in organized activities like wine tasting, cocktail classes, and cooking lessons using the estate’s produce.
While there isn’t a full spa, there’s a treatment room for massages and facials, which can also be arranged in some rooms. For those who like to stay active, there’s no gym, but each room comes equipped with a Technogym case containing resistance bands, a foam roller, and yoga mats for in-room or outdoor workouts.
The hotel can also help arrange external activities such as excursions to Mount Etna, horse riding, yoga lessons, biking, golf, and tennis at nearby locations, or even helicopter tours. However, the core experience is about embracing a slower rhythm with nature.
Exploring the Etna Region
Monaci delle Terre Nere is conveniently located just about 40 minutes from Catania, yet high in the hills, it feels a world away. Below the estate, you’ll find charming coastal towns like Acireale and Aci Trezza, each about 500 meters down the hillside. Etna itself looms large, with scenic roads leading up the volcano starting from Zafferana Etnea, the town just above Monaci.
The Crateri Silvestri, where you can walk inside extinct craters with views over Catania, is about a 35-minute drive further uphill. Taormina is also within easy reach, around a 45-minute drive away. The renowned wineries of Etna are located on the opposite side of the volcano, accessible via the scenic route to Randazzo.
A car is essential for exploring the wider region, as public transport options are limited, with the nearest train station in Acireale, about six miles downhill. However, if you prefer to stay put and truly disconnect, the estate itself offers plenty to occupy your time.
We found that Monaci delle Terre Nere truly offers a chance to reset. Michael loved exploring the vineyards, while Lily spent hours collecting interesting leaves and stones in her private garden at our villa. Even the simple act of having breakfast in the pine grove felt special. For us, the focus on nature and the quiet charm of the place was exactly what we needed in 2026.
