See Cagliari’s Roman Theater and Beaches

I recently explored Sardinia, and one of its most fascinating cities, Cagliari, really captured my heart. It’s the capital of the island and though it’s known as a summer spot, I found it a brilliant place to visit any time of year. There’s so much to see and do, especially if you love being outdoors, which I certainly do. I wanted to share some of my favorite outdoor spots that made my trip so memorable.

Exploring the Cagliari Coastline

The coast around Cagliari offers some truly stunning natural beauty. Whether you want to relax on the sand or explore scenic viewpoints, there’s something for everyone. I loved how close these spots were to the city, making them easy to access for a day trip or even just an afternoon adventure.

Poetto Beach Experiences

You really can’t talk about Cagliari without mentioning Poetto Beach. It’s this incredibly long stretch of sand, about 8 kilometers in total, and locals call it “Su Poettu.” A good portion of it actually belongs to the neighboring town of Quartu S. Elena, but it all feels connected. What’s great is that there are plenty of bars and services right along the promenade, and they stay open all year. This means you’ll see locals here no matter the season. In the cooler months, people come for lunch, coffee, and to catch up with friends while enjoying the sun and the sea view. In summer, it’s a whole different scene, from sunbathing and swimming during the day to a lively nightlife with clubs and restaurants after dark. It’s a place that truly has a life of its own, day and night, summer and winter.

What is Poetto Beach like in winter?

Even in winter, Poetto Beach is a lovely place to visit. The atmosphere is more relaxed, and it’s a perfect spot to enjoy a warm drink and the sea breeze.

During the colder months, locals often use the beach areas for leisurely lunches and social gatherings. It’s a peaceful time to appreciate the natural beauty without the summer crowds.

Marina Piccola Views

Right at the start of Poetto Beach, on Cagliari’s side, you’ll find Marina Piccola. It’s a small harbor that sits just below a really impressive hill called “Sella del Diavolo” (Devil’s Saddle). Like the beach, it gets much more active in the summer when people stroll, grab a drink, or browse the little stalls selling local goods. I found that visiting early in the morning was magical. The only sounds were the gentle lapping of the waves and the quiet creak of the boats. It’s a really peaceful way to start the day, taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor before it gets busy.

When is the best time to visit Marina Piccola?

Visiting Marina Piccola early in the morning is highly recommended for a peaceful experience.

Historic City Sights

Cagliari is steeped in history, and many of its most impressive sights are outdoor attractions that offer incredible views and a glimpse into the past. I loved wandering through the older parts of the city and stumbling upon these historical gems.

Bastione St. Remy Panorama

The Bastione di San Remy is a truly striking fortification located in the heart of the old city. It was constructed over a pretty long period, from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Because it’s built up high, it gives you absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city and the harbor below. The vista from the top is simply stunning. There’s an indoor area on the first floor where they often hold exhibitions, which is nice if you need a break from the sun. But the real magic is on the upper levels – the outdoor sections. You can find charming cafeterias where you can sit with a drink, or you can just find a bench, take a walk, and soak in the scenery. It’s the perfect spot for taking photographs, especially with the amazing sea in the background.

What can you see from Bastione St. Remy?

From the Bastione, you get incredible views of the entire city and the harbor.

It’s an ideal location for photography, offering a unique perspective of Cagliari and its coastline.

Yenne Square Atmosphere

Yenne Square is one of the main gathering places in the city, situated right in the center. Its location at a busy intersection of four major streets makes it a hub of activity. You’ll find lots of bars, restaurants, and cafes that set up tables and chairs outside, inviting you to sit down with a coffee or a delicious gelato. Even though it’s lively all year round, it really comes alive in the summer. It transforms into a popular spot for nightlife, drawing in both locals and tourists. It’s a wonderful place to just sit, people-watch, and get a feel for the city’s rhythm. And if you’re looking for ice cream, you’re in luck; some of the city’s best are found here.

What are Yenne Square’s main attractions?

Yenne Square is a central hub with many outdoor cafes and restaurants.

It’s a great place for people-watching and enjoying gelato, especially during the summer evenings.

Roman Theatre History

Cagliari has its own ancient amphitheater, not quite as famous as the Colosseum, but incredibly impressive nonetheless. This Roman Theatre is a remarkable piece of ancient architecture carved directly into the rock. It dates back to the 2nd century AD. In Roman times, it was used for performances and spectacles. Today, it continues to be a venue for concerts, plays, and various cultural events. I highly recommend trying to catch a performance if you have the chance. Experiencing a show in such a historic setting is truly unforgettable. It offers a tangible connection to the past while still being a place of modern entertainment.

While Cagliari itself has so much to offer, the surrounding areas, particularly Chia, provide a different kind of natural beauty that is absolutely worth exploring. It’s a bit of a drive, but the scenery is well worth the journey.

Chia’s Stunning Beaches

About 45 kilometers from Cagliari lies Chia, a place renowned for its breathtaking white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters. This area is a paradise for beach lovers. I was amazed by the quality of the water, which was so transparent you could see right to the bottom. Capo Spartivento Lighthouse

Further south, at the very southern tip of Sardinia, you’ll find Capo Spartivento, home to the distinctive Faro di Capo Spartivento, which is still a working lighthouse. On a very clear day, you might even be able to spot it from certain beaches on the east coast, like Su Giudeu beach. Making the trip to the lighthouse is highly recommended. From its vantage point, you get absolutely stunning 360-degree panoramic views over the deep blue Sardinian seas. It’s a truly breathtaking sight. Don’t miss the chance to wander through the lighthouse gardens, too; they are beautifully maintained and add another layer to the visit. Seeing the vastness of the sea from this point felt profound.
