If you’re thinking about a trip to Italy, Milan should definitely be on your list. It’s a city that really has it all – history, art, fashion, and amazing food. It’s no wonder millions visit every year. Whether you’re looking for high-end designers or more affordable shops, Milan has something for every budget. For those who love culture, the architecture is stunning, with the Duomo Cathedral being a must-see. Planning an itinerary can be a bit overwhelming with so much to see, but I’ve put together some ideas based on my recent visit in 2026.
Milan’s Must-See Sights
Cathedrals and Art Masterpieces
The Duomo di Milano is an absolute showstopper. It took almost six centuries to build, and the result is breathtaking. It’s not only the biggest church in Italy but also the third largest in the world. You can explore the inside, or for incredible panoramic views of the city, get tickets to go up to the rooftop. Be prepared for long queues, especially during peak season. Booking tickets in advance is a really good idea so you don’t waste precious time waiting. It was incredible watching Lily point out the spires from the rooftop – she was mesmerized by the sheer scale of it.
For art lovers, seeing Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ mural is an absolute must. It’s located in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, and you do need a ticket to view it. While the church itself is lovely, there isn’t much else to do there, so looking into combo tickets that include other attractions might be a budget-friendly option if you’re trying to see a lot without breaking the bank. Trying to get tickets for this was Michael’s main mission before we left, and it was worth the effort.
Historical and Artistic Hubs
Sforza Castle is a fascinating place to spend an afternoon. This 15th-century castle houses several museums and a collection of famous artworks, including an unfinished piece by Michelangelo. It’s a perfect spot to soak up Milan’s rich history and culture without feeling rushed. We wandered through the courtyards, imagining life centuries ago, and Ethan loved exploring the different rooms.
The Pinacoteca di Brera is another art haven. If you want a taste of Milan’s incredible art scene, this public art gallery is a fantastic starting point. It features works by masters like Raphael and Titian. Wandering through the halls, surrounded by such world-renowned art, is an inspiring experience. I found myself sketching some of the pieces in my travel journal later that day.
Take a walk through Piazza Mercanti, the central city square. It is home to palaces, offices, and statues, along with the old town hall that dates back to 1233. It really feels like stepping back into Medieval Milan as you admire the architecture. It’s a lovely spot for a quiet moment, away from some of the larger crowds.
Engaging Experiences in Milan
Exploring Waterways and Stadiums
A scenic stroll along the canals in the Navigli District is highly recommended, especially in the evening. The atmosphere is magical as the lights reflect on the water. There are many restaurants lining the canals, offering delicious Italian cuisine. It feels like you’ve discovered a whole different side of Milan down here. We enjoyed a lovely dinner by the water, and it was a relaxing end to a busy day.
Football fans won’t want to miss a visit to San Siro Stadium, the home ground for A.C Milan. Catching a match here is an electrifying experience, given it’s the largest stadium in Italy. Even if there isn’t a game on during your visit, they offer stadium tours which give you a great glimpse into the history and scale of this iconic venue. Michael was keen to do a tour, and he loved seeing the changing rooms and walking out onto the pitch.
Cultural Performances and Retail Therapy
For an unforgettable evening, consider watching a performance at the stunning La Scala Opera House. It’s one of the world’s most famous opera houses. While the best seats can be pricey, there are more affordable options that still offer brilliant views. You can sometimes find tickets for as little as €13, depending on the show and the night you choose. It’s a sophisticated way to spend an evening soaking in the culture.
No visit to Milan is complete without indulging in some shopping. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is an architectural marvel and one of the oldest shopping malls in history. It’s as much a sightseeing opportunity as it is a place to shop. The stunning architecture and decor make it a pleasure to walk through, even if you’re not buying anything. I found a beautiful silk scarf here that’s now a treasured souvenir.

Dining Delights in Milan
Unique Dining Experiences
One of the most unique dining experiences is at Tram Ristorante ATMosfera. Located just a few steps from Piazza Duomo, this refurbished tram offers a dining experience unlike any other. As you enjoy delicious Italian dishes, the tram makes its way through the city, allowing you to take in the biggest sights while you eat. Dining while seeing the city pass by was a novel experience for the kids.
Luini is famous for its street food, and the queues are always long, but it’s truly worth the wait. Their panzerotti are a must-try. These are small dough parcels filled with a variety of mouthwatering ingredients, from classic tomato and mozzarella to spicy pepperoni. They make for a quick and tasty snack while you’re out and about.
Casual Bites and Global Flavors
Cafe Trussardi, a stone’s throw from La Scala, is a perfect spot for a light bite before a show. With a selection of daily main dishes and delicious snacks, it’s a convenient place to grab a bite. I found their small pastries perfect for a quick afternoon treat.
TripAdvisor reviews often rave about Piz, with many claiming it serves the best pizza in Milan. It’s not just the delicious pizzas that are enticing; Piz also boasts very budget-friendly prices. You can enjoy a fantastic pizza for around €7.5, making it a great option for a casual and affordable meal. Michael insisted we try it, and he wasn’t wrong — the pizza was fantastic.
If you’re looking for something different, Savana Ristorante Eritreo offers a taste of African cuisine. It’s a great opportunity to mix up your culinary experiences with hearty portions and distinctive decor. We decided to try it one evening, and it was a refreshing change from Italian fare, with incredibly flavorful dishes.

Travel Tips for Your Visit
Dining and Tipping Customs
In Italy, dinner is typically eaten later, often starting around 8 pm. Booking a table for a later time will likely mean you encounter a more lively atmosphere. It’s a good idea to have a small snack in the afternoon to keep you going until dinner. This is a habit we quickly adopted.
Tipping in Milan is flexible. It’s customary to tip taxi drivers, theatre ushers, and luggage handlers. For restaurants, a small tip is appreciated if you’ve had good service, but it’s not always expected in the same way as other countries. Often, a service charge might already be included.
Best Time to Visit
Milan enjoys a sunny and warm climate during spring and autumn, which are excellent times to visit. Summers can get quite hot, with temperatures potentially reaching 35 degrees Celsius, so if you don’t enjoy extreme heat, it’s best to avoid visiting then. Winter temperatures can drop to around 3 degrees Celsius, so if you’re planning a Christmas city break, make sure to pack warm clothing. We found late September to be perfect, with pleasant weather for exploring.
Milan is a city that truly surprised us with its depth and variety. From the awe-inspiring architecture to the delicious food and the sheer energy of the place, it offers a travel experience that’s both enriching and enjoyable for everyone. We’re already thinking about our next visit.
