Milan might be known for its fashion, but for me, what truly draws me in is its incredible wine scene. With some of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions just a short drive away, the city offers a constant supply of delicious vino. The natural wine movement, in particular, is absolutely booming here, and exploring the latest wine bars and restaurants has become a favorite pastime.
Experience Milan’s Wine Culture
Milan’s approach to wine is as varied and sophisticated as its culinary offerings. You can find everything from Michelin-starred dining experiences to cozy, unpretentious wine bars, all united by a passion for quality wines and often, a commitment to ethical sourcing.
The Ethical Hour at Horto
I was so intrigued by the concept of the ‘ethical hour’ at Horto, a rooftop restaurant that opened in September 2022. It’s about celebrating gastronomy with a strong focus on where the food and wine come from. Chef Alberto Toè, working under Norbert Niederkofler, sources ingredients from local farmers and dairies, featuring things like Varzese beef and a fascinating raw-milk blue cheese called Strachítunt. Even though the food is limited to that ‘ethical hour,’ their wine list is extensive, and every selection aligns with the restaurant’s ethos, championing small producers focused on natural, organic, and biodynamic wines.
Michelin-Starred Sophistication at Andrea Aprea
For a truly special occasion, Andrea Aprea’s restaurant, located on the top floor of the Luigi Rovati Foundation’s art museum, is an absolute must-visit. With two Michelin stars, it’s a place where food and wine are treated as art. The dining room is beautifully designed, creating a sense of both space and intimacy. Chef Aprea’s multi-course tasting menus are a testament to his skill, and the wine list is equally impressive, boasting over 650 labels, from well-known names to rare finds. I’d definitely trust their sommelier to guide me through the perfect pairings.
Casual Charm at Cru Wine Bar
Cru wine bar offers a more relaxed vibe, and I love that they have two locations. Founded by Jacopo Ercolani, who developed a passion for minimal intervention wines, Cru focuses on wines by the glass and delicious local cheese and charcuterie boards. Cru Arc, a smaller spot near Arco della Pace, is perfect for a casual evening, especially with its outdoor seating. Cru Island, in the Isola area, offers more space and a terrace. Their selection of around 300 European producers means the glass pours change daily, offering a great way to sample different styles. Don’t hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations; they’re excellent at matching wines to your taste.
Socially Conscious Sips at Enoteca/Naturale
Enoteca/Naturale is more than just a wine bar and restaurant; it’s a force for good. Situated in the lovely Parco delle Basiliche in the Ticinese area, it shares its space with Emergency, a humanitarian foundation. It operates as an ‘SRL Benefit’ company, promoting social integration and diversity by hiring immigrants. What’s wonderful is that you can enjoy their extensive wine-by-the-glass selection, poured by knowledgeable and friendly staff, while also supporting a great cause. It feels like a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Natural Wine Haven at Vineria Eretica
Since 2019, Vineria Eretica has been a go-to spot for natural wine lovers, and I can see why. Tucked away near Milano Centrale, this intimate place has an outstanding list curated by owner Giuseppe Bertini, featuring hard-to-find French and other European natural wines. If Giuseppe is there, he’s a wealth of knowledge about producers and styles. Paired with small plates made from organic ingredients, it’s a delightful experience. The vintage movie posters and memorabilia add a unique, personal touch to the ambiance.
Underground Cool at Champagne Socialist
Champagne Socialist, established in 2017 by the same people behind Forno Collettivo bakery, has a wonderfully unpretentious atmosphere despite being near the trendy Corso Buenos Aires. The interior, with its peeling paint and exposed cement walls, feels like a cozy, underground cellar. They focus on Italian wines, organized by region, and offer great sandwiches, cheese, and charcuterie. I also heard they have monthly tastings led by featured producers, which sounds like a fantastic way to meet winemakers and mingle.
Pioneering Natural Wines at Vinoir
Vinoir is often cited as Milan’s first natural wine enoteca, and it’s been a favorite since 2012. Located a bit off the beaten path in the Navigli district, it’s a place for those seeking small-production, minimal-intervention wines from Italy and beyond. Owner Gianluca Ladu and his wife Maddalena create a welcoming atmosphere for conversation and education. They host producer tastings and serve delicious, affordable small plates, like handmade pasta. It’s also a retail shop, so if you find a bottle you love, you can take it home.
Elegant Indulgence at Bicerin
Stepping into Bicerin feels like entering a sophisticated, antique wine shop. The dark paint, mirrored glass, and plush velvet chairs create a unique ambiance. Three friends dreamed up this elegant space to showcase their impressive collection of 800 wine labels, many of which are mature and rare, available through the Coravin system. You can relax in their lounge areas or book the ‘wine library’ for a private tasting experience, whether for lunch or dinner. The à la carte menu features seasonal, local ingredients beautifully prepared, like rabbit with potato gratin or gnocchi with artichokes.
Classic Delights at Rovello 18
Rovello 18, a warm and welcoming trattoria that opened in 2002, is still an insider’s secret for its incredible wine list, particularly its grower Champagne selection. With over 800 bins, you can find a wine for every palate and budget, from an accessible Dolcetto d’Alba to an aged Barolo magnum. The food here is just as much of a draw as the wine. Classic dishes like vitello tonnato, fassona steak tartare, and veal chop Milanese have earned this family-run establishment a nod from the Michelin Guide. It feels like a place where you can truly savor traditional Italian flavors.
Glamorous Dining at Beefbar
Beefbar, which opened in March 2023, has quickly become a stylish spot for wine lovers. Located near the glamorous Portrait Milano hotel, its interior design blends retro and contemporary elements, evoking 1950s Italian glamour with its arches, curved lines, and velvet banquettes. While it offers a more relaxed take on traditional meat restaurants, with comfort dishes and global flavors like Kobe beef carbonara, the wine list is definitely geared towards classic pairings with steak. You’ll find plenty of well-known labels from Piedmont and Tuscany, complemented by selections from the rest of Italy and France.
A Family Sip in Milan
One of my most memorable moments in Milan was enjoying a simple yet perfect glass of wine at a small enoteca with Michael. Lily and Ethan were happily occupied with some breadsticks and cheese, their own little tasting adventure, allowing us to momentarily relax and soak in the atmosphere. It was a quiet evening, but it perfectly captured the essence of what I love about Milan’s wine culture – accessible, enjoyable, and conducive to shared moments, no matter how quick. We were there in early 2026, and even with the kids, it felt like a special adult escape, a taste of Milanese life we could all appreciate in our own way.
Exploring Milan through its wine has been such a rewarding experience. I hope you find these recommendations helpful as you plan your own visits to this incredible city.
