Visit Rome Inspired by “The Old Guard 2”

My recent trip to Rome felt like stepping into a movie, especially with “The Old Guard 2” having been filmed there. It’s amazing how a city can be both ancient and feel so alive with modern filmmaking. The filmmakers chose Rome for a reason, and you can really feel the history around every corner. It’s a place where you can wander and imagine all sorts of stories unfolding.

Exploring Rome like an Immortal

You can easily spend days exploring the city. Many of the scenes from the movie were shot right here in Rome. Even though some of the interior action happened on soundstages, the city itself is such a strong presence in the film. You get to see familiar landmarks and beautiful streets that make you want to jump right in and explore yourself. It’s a place that truly becomes a character in the story.

Rome’s history is so vast, and it’s no wonder it inspired a story about immortals. You can almost feel the echoes of centuries past as you walk through its streets. The way the city is presented in the film really highlights its enduring beauty and sense of timelessness, which perfectly matches the theme of eternal life.

Cinecittà Studios Sets

A key filming location for “The Old Guard 2” was Cinecittà Studios, right in the heart of Rome. This is a place where many movies have been made, and it has a rich history in filmmaking. It’s fascinating to think that some of the scenes you saw on screen were brought to life within these walls. They even offer tours, so you can step onto the actual sets and learn about the magic of cinema.

Visiting the studio can give you a behind-the-scenes look at how films are created. You can see the soundstages and understand what goes into building the worlds you see on Netflix. It’s a great experience for anyone interested in movies and the art of storytelling. It adds another layer to your visit when you know that this is where some of the action happened.

Imagine walking through the same spaces where actors performed and cameras rolled. It’s pretty cool to connect the movie magic you enjoyed with the real-world location where it was captured. The history of Cinecittà itself is a big part of Rome’s cultural landscape.

Rome’s Ancient Wonders

You can’t talk about Rome without mentioning its iconic landmarks. The Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain are just two examples of places that appeared in the background of “The Old Guard 2.” They are must-see spots for any visitor. Standing in front of the Colosseum, you can feel its immense history and imagine the gladiatorial contests that took place there centuries ago. It’s a powerful sight.

The Trevi Fountain is another beautiful spot. It’s a tradition to throw a coin into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome, and it’s such a romantic gesture. The sheer artistry of the fountain is breathtaking, and it’s always a lively place with people taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s easy to see why filmmakers would want to incorporate such stunning imagery.

Beyond these famous sites, the catacombs and crypts offer a different kind of historical exploration. They provide a glimpse into ancient burial practices and give you a sense of the layers of history beneath the modern city. It’s a bit of a somber experience, but incredibly fascinating and unique to Rome.

Journeys Through the City

Filming also took place along Rome’s urban streets and even in the surrounding countryside. This means that as you explore, you might be walking in the footsteps of the movie’s characters. Renting a car can be helpful if you want to explore the farther-flung locations, like Lake Iseo in Bergamo Province, though using public transport in the city is very convenient.

Rome’s public transit system is quite good, with trains and buses readily available. It makes getting around easy and affordable. Even if you don’t rent a car, you can still see a lot of the city. The main areas are very walkable, and taxis or rideshare apps are also options for getting to specific spots.

When Michael and I visited, we decided to immerse ourselves in the city’s rhythm. Michael loved navigating the public transport system, while I was busy capturing photos of the ancient architecture. Little Lily was thrilled whenever we passed a gelato shop, and Ethan mostly just enjoyed pointing at all the moving Vespas.

Best Times to Visit

Many people say there’s no bad time to visit Rome, and I can see why. However, if you’re planning your first trip, aiming for mid-spring, specifically April and May, is a great idea. The weather is usually mild, and there are fewer crowds than in the peak summer months. This makes it much more pleasant to explore the city on foot.

The spring months offer a fantastic opportunity to spend more time outdoors, taking in the ancient city and its culture. You can really absorb the atmosphere without feeling rushed. Fall is another excellent option, especially if you appreciate wine. It’s the season for fresh wine harvests, offering a different kind of local flavor to experience.

We went in late April, and it was perfect. The mornings were crisp, and the afternoons were warm and sunny. It made our explorations with the kids incredibly enjoyable, and we could linger at outdoor cafes without feeling too hot or cold. It really allowed us to appreciate the city’s beauty at a relaxed pace.

Culinary Delights of Rome

Italian cuisine is famous worldwide, and Rome is no exception. You’ll find incredible pizza everywhere, and the wine selection is outstanding. It’s a food lover’s paradise. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a fine dining experience, Rome has it all.

For specific restaurant recommendations, consider places like Romoletto, Il Bacaro, or Grappolo d’Oro, which even boasts a Michelin star. Even the simplest trattoria can offer a memorable meal. You’ll discover dining experiences that are truly unique to the city. The focus on fresh ingredients and traditional preparation is evident in every bite.

We treated ourselves to a special dinner at Grappolo d’Oro one evening. It was a real highlight. Michael was impressed by the wine list, and the kids absolutely devoured their pasta dishes. It felt like a perfect way to celebrate our time in such an amazing city, indulging in some of its best food.

Where to Stay

Rome offers a wide range of accommodations, from centrally located hotels to options on the city’s periphery. Many hotels in the heart of the city are surprisingly affordable. Some well-regarded local favorites include Hotel Amalfi, , and Nord Nuova Roma.

Even if you can’t snag a room at a high-end resort, the chain hotels scattered around the city’s edges still provide comfortable and luxurious stays. These can be a good option if you plan to spend most of your time out exploring and just need a comfortable place to rest at night. Saving money on accommodation means more to spend on experiences like cooking classes or exploring local markets.

We stayed in a lovely hotel near the Vatican. While not ultra-luxury, it was clean, comfortable, and in a great location. It allowed us to easily walk to many sights. Lily especially liked the small balcony where she could wave down at the people walking by, feeling like she was part of the Roman scene.

Things to Do Beyond the Film

Beyond the direct filming locations, Rome has endless attractions. Taking a traditional Italian cooking class is a fantastic way to engage with the local culture and learn some new skills. Plus, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor with delicious wine!

If you have more time and a spirit for adventure, consider day trips to nearby Pompeii or the stunning Amalfi Coast. These offer different perspectives on Italy’s beauty and history. Pompeii, with its remarkably preserved ancient ruins, is like stepping back in time. The Amalfi Coast, with its dramatic cliffs and charming villages, is simply breathtaking.

For families traveling with children, Rome also offers waterparks, zoos, and other attractions suitable for younger visitors. It’s a city that caters to everyone, ensuring a memorable vacation for all ages. You can easily fill your itinerary with a mix of historical sites, cultural experiences, and family-friendly fun.

What’s the film pub in “The Old Guard”?

The pub featured in the first “Old Guard” film is the Prospect of Whitby in London. This is a real place, known as the Riverside Pub, and it’s one of the oldest pubs in that city.

It’s interesting how they chose a real, historic location to represent an immortal’s hangout. It adds an authentic touch to the fictional world.

Did Andy regain her powers in “The Old Guard 2”?

Yes, Charlize Theron’s character, Andy, does regain her immortal powers in “The Old Guard 2.” This is a significant plot point that develops from the end of the first film.

Her journey to get her abilities back is a central part of the sequel’s story, and it’s great to see her back in full action.

Will there be “The Old Guard 3”?

While the creator Greg Rucka has mentioned that “The Old Guard” was envisioned as a trilogy, a third film has not yet been officially confirmed by Netflix. The decision likely depends on the success and viewership of the second installment.

It could take some time before any official announcement is made, so for now, fans can enjoy the existing movies and hope for a continuation of the story.

Rome truly is a city that can inspire countless stories, whether historical or fictional. It’s a place I’d love to return to, to explore more of its hidden corners and soak in its timeless atmosphere.
