Cefalù, a jewel on Sicily’s northern coast, truly stole my heart. It’s the kind of place where every corner reveals a postcard-worthy view, making it incredibly easy to fall in love with. If you’re planning a visit, I’m already a little jealous! I’ve put together a guide to the top experiences here, blending relaxation, incredible food, and a touch of adventure – my perfect travel recipe.
Discover Cefalù’s Beautiful Beaches
No trip to Cefalù is complete without some serious beach time. The main stretch, Lungomare, is a vast sandy expanse, over five kilometers long. You have the choice of public areas for a free sunbathing session or private sections where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. We opted for the latter, finding €20 for two loungers, a table, and an umbrella gave us a comfortable base for the whole day. While you can order food to your lounger, we found the quality wasn’t quite up to par, so we preferred to venture out for meals.
For a quieter vibe, consider Kalura Beach, a short drive or a pleasant walk from town. It’s a pebble beach but incredibly picturesque, with sunbed rentals available for added comfort. If escaping the crowds is your priority, Mazzaforno Beach is a stunning sandy cove about a 15-minute drive away. It’s well worth the journey for a more secluded beach experience, complete with loungers and a casual beach cafe.
What is the main beach called?
The main beach in Cefalù is named Lungomare, stretching over five kilometers of golden sand.
It offers both public access and private sections with paid loungers and umbrellas.
Experience the Thrill of Paragliding
For an unforgettable adrenaline rush and truly breathtaking views, paragliding over Cefalù is an absolute must-do. We booked a tandem flight and it was easily one of the most incredible experiences of our entire Sicily trip. Our friendly pilots picked us up and took us to the takeoff point, where they expertly put us at ease. Soaring above Cefalù, we took in sweeping panoramas of the town, the coastline, the glistening sea, and the majestic mountains beyond. What truly impressed us was the duration of the flight; it lasted a full 30 to 40 minutes, allowing ample time to soak in the scenery and the sensation of flight.
The fact that epic photos and videos, captured on a GoPro, were included in the €150 per person price was a fantastic bonus, as this often incurs extra charges. The value for money felt exceptional given the flight’s length and the included media package.
How much does paragliding cost?

This price includes the flight and a package of photos and videos from the experience.
Embark on a Coastal Boat Tour
Another highlight was a 3-hour boat tour along Cefalù’s stunning coastline. This small group excursion, with a maximum of 12 passengers, offered a truly relaxing way to explore. We were taken to three different beautiful spots, including a surprising cave, allowing us to swim in crystal-clear waters with no one else around. The captain provided us with complimentary prosecco and snacks, making it a delightful way to spend the afternoon, especially as a way to beat the Sicilian heat.
These tours are quite popular and tend to sell out, so booking in advance is highly recommended. Opting for the 3 pm tour was perfect for us, but a morning slot is also available.

The boat tour includes a 3-hour journey along the coast with swimming opportunities.
Guests also receive complimentary prosecco and snacks during the excursion.
Savor Aperitivo with Sunset Views
The Italian tradition of aperitivo is something I deeply appreciate, and Cefalù offers some perfect spots to enjoy it with a view. As the sun begins to dip, head to one of the fantastic seafront bars. We discovered two favorites. Bordomari Sea Lounge Bar, a short walk from the main beach, boasts incredible cocktails and spectacular views. Securing a spot on their deck, which extends out over the water, is a must, but be sure to book in advance, as they don’t have a website and are best contacted via Instagram or in person.
While cocktails here range from €12-€16 and come with complimentary snacks, they don’t serve full meals. For a more budget-friendly option that does offer food, Liberty Restaurant Bistro Wine Bar, located next door, was also a hit. Their tapas were delicious, and they are also known for their excellent seafood. The atmosphere was friendly, and the drinks were more reasonably priced.
Where is the best place for sunset drinks?
Bardomari Sea Lounge Bar offers amazing cocktails and ocean views from its deck.
Liberty Restaurant Bistro Wine Bar provides a more affordable option with tapas and seafood.
Hike La Rocca di Cefalù
For panoramic vistas of the town and surrounding coastline, a hike up La Rocca di Cefalù is highly recommended. This prominent cliff overlooking the town offers multiple levels, each providing increasingly stunning views. There’s even a castle at the summit to explore. Be aware that there’s a €5 entrance fee, payable by cash or card, and appropriate footwear is essential – they’ve been known to turn away those in flip-flops!
We found it best to go early, around 8 am during the summer months, to beat the intense heat. The climb to the first level, featuring an ancient archaeological site and picnic spots, took about 20 minutes. Another 10 minutes brought us to the castle, with magnificent views from both vantage points. It’s a rewarding climb, and I highly recommend it for the scenery alone.
What is the entrance fee for La Rocca?
The entrance fee for La Rocca di Cefalù is €5 per person.
Payment can be made with cash or card at the entrance gate.
Embark on a Jeep Sunset Tour
For an off-the-beaten-path adventure, a private sunset Jeep tour into the Madonie mountains is an exciting option. This tour takes you away from the typical tourist spots to witness an unforgettable sunset in seclusion, followed by an authentic Sicilian barbecue. It’s a tailor-made experience, perfect for a romantic evening, a family outing, or a fun excursion with friends. The Jeep ride through the mountains is exhilarating, and the sunsets are truly spectacular.
The highlight for many is the authentic Sicilian barbecue dinner served at a local chalet in the woods, complete with local wine and limoncello. This €99 tour offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with traditional Sicilian culture and enjoy incredible scenery, guided by a passionate host who shares his culture enthusiastically. When we traveled with the kids, Ethan was fascinated by the mountain goats we saw along the way, a small but memorable moment for him.

Watch the Sunset from Bastione di Capo Marchiafava
Of all the sunset spots in Cefalù, Bastione di Capo Marchiafava stood out as a favorite. This 17th-century fort, situated right on the water’s edge, offers breathtaking panoramic ocean views, making it an idyllic location to watch the sun descend. It’s a popular spot for wedding photos, so you might even catch a ceremony. The atmosphere here is wonderful, and it’s free to visit. Despite its popularity, it rarely feels overcrowded, and evenings are often enhanced by the sounds of local buskers.
Its convenient location within the town makes it easily accessible by foot. Honestly, this is a spot you absolutely do not want to miss during your stay.

Enjoy a Drink in Piazza Duomo
Piazza Duomo is arguably the most beautiful square in Cefalù, perfectly situated at the base of the magnificent Cattedrale di Cefalù, a celebrated example of Arab-Norman architecture. Grabbing a drink or a meal at one of the many restaurants surrounding the piazza provides a fantastic opportunity to soak in the views and the lively atmosphere. We loved sitting here with Lily, sharing a gelato and people-watching while the cathedral stood majestically behind us.
Bar Duomo, located on a corner, offers excellent views of the cathedral. For a coffee and pastry, Osteria del Duoma is a great choice, known for their exceptionally large cornetti. The bars and restaurants here are always buzzing with energy.

Explore Medieval Villages and Wine Regions
For a deep dive into the region’s history and wine, a tour of nearby medieval villages is a must. This private tour from Cefalù includes visits to castles, churches, and vineyards. We started in the charming village of Pollina, with its cobblestone streets and sea views. A highlight was Castello dei Ventimiglia, a massive castle whose history, local ghost stories, and legends were fascinatingly explained by our guide.
After exploring Castelbuono, with its quaint shops, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at a 12th-century abbey. This was paired with some of the best local wines, with a wine tasting costing an additional €25 for four different varieties. The guides and drivers on these tours are typically excellent, offering a true taste of Sicilian culture and scenery away from the main tourist paths. This felt like such an enriching experience for the whole family.

The wine tasting is an additional €25 per person.
It includes a selection of four different local wines.
Indulge in Authentic Sicilian Food
Sicily’s culinary reputation is well-deserved, and Cefalù offers a chance to sample its incredible dishes. Cannoli are a quintessential Sicilian treat, and we found the absolute best at Piccolo Gelato, a small spot near Piazza Duomo. Their cannoli were truly outstanding, the crisp shell perfectly complementing the sweet, creamy filling. It’s a simple, no-frills place, but the taste is unforgettable.
Another must-try is Arancini, deep-fried rice balls. Sfrigola Cefalu served them incredibly fresh, with a wide variety of flavors to choose from. Arancini is classic street food, perfect for a quick and satisfying bite. As a coastal city, seafood in Cefalù is exceptional. Mandralisca Sedici, tucked away down a charming alley, offers a delightful outdoor dining experience and is renowned for its fresh seafood, particularly whole fish, octopus, and giant prawns. If Mandralisca is full, the adjacent Badia Bistro is an equally excellent choice, known for its delicious seafood and amberjack carpaccio.
Where can I find the best cannoli?
Piccolo Gelato is highly recommended for its exceptional cannoli.
It is a small, unassuming shop located a short walk from Piazza Duomo.
Where to Stay in Cefalù
To truly appreciate Cefalù, I suggest spending at least three days. Accommodation options range from luxury hotels to charming apartments. For a lavish experience, Hotel Kalura offers stunning panoramic views, a private beach, and a host of amenities including a pool and water sports. It’s a bit outside of town, but easily accessible by bike or a pleasant walk.
We opted for a mid-range studio apartment in the historic center, which gave us more space and a kitchen, making it feel like our own Italian home. Its location was perfect, within walking distance of major attractions and the beach. For mid-range B&B accommodations with breathtaking views, Ma&Mi Guest House is perched on a cliff, offering serene surroundings and spectacular vistas, though it involves a bit of a climb back from town.

Renting a Car in Italy
For those looking to explore beyond Cefalù and discover more of Sicily or Italy, renting a car is an excellent idea. While Italian roads can be a bit challenging, especially in cities, a rental car offers unparalleled freedom. When booking, I always rely on Discover Cars, as they compare numerous providers to find the best rates. Remember to drive on the right, stay alert, and consider the necessity of an International Driving Permit if you’re coming from outside the EU.
Opting for full coverage insurance is highly recommended for peace of mind, especially given the potential for minor scrapes in narrow streets. Be mindful of ZTL (restricted traffic) zones in city centers, which can incur hefty fines if entered without a permit. A compact car is usually the most practical choice due to narrow roads and tight parking spaces across Italy.
What is needed to rent a car in Italy?
A valid driver’s license from your home country is required.
An International Driving Permit may be needed for non-EU residents.
Cefalù is a place that truly captivates. Whether you’re relaxing on its golden sands, exploring its historic heart, or venturing into the surrounding landscapes, it offers a rich and rewarding experience. I hope this guide helps you plan an unforgettable visit to this dreamy Sicilian town.
