Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region is a place that truly delights the senses, and my recent trip to Modena was a perfect example of this. It feels like a region where a deep appreciation for both finely crafted machinery and exceptional food is simply in the air. You can experience this duality firsthand, starting with a visit to the heart of Italian automotive excellence.
Motor Valley Marvels
Experiencing Automotive Innovation
Modena is situated right in the heart of Italy’s Motor Valley, a region famous for its luxury car manufacturers. It’s incredible to be so close to brands that have become legends in automotive history. The energy of this place is something you can feel, even if you’re not a dedicated car enthusiast.
This area is home to iconic names like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti, alongside the renowned Maserati. The proximity of these companies creates a unique atmosphere, a testament to Italian engineering and design.
A Taste of Modena
Culinary Delights of Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna is also celebrated for its incredible cuisine, and Modena is a fantastic place to sample its most famous offerings. Many of the most beloved Italian foods have their roots right here, making it a true gastronomic destination.
You’ll find world-class prosciutto di Parma, rich mortadella, and the complex flavors of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. And then there’s the famous balsamic vinegar, an essential part of the local culinary identity.
Exploring Traditional Balsamic Vinegar
A visit to an “acetaia,” or vinegar cellar, is a must when in Modena. I had the opportunity to tour Acetaia Pedroni, a place with a history dating back centuries to an old monastery. The Pedroni family has been producing traditional balsamic vinegar since 1862, following time-honored methods.
I learned about the rigorous process involved in creating this prized condiment. To be officially certified as Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, the vinegar must age for a minimum of 12 years, and often much longer.
The tasting experience was truly memorable. I sampled a 25-year-aged vinegar from a barrel that was itself 150 years old. It offered a depth of flavor that was unlike anything I had tasted before; it was a revelation.
Following the tour, I enjoyed a delightful four-course lunch featuring local specialties enhanced by balsamic vinegar. The standout for me was a simple vanilla custard, transformed by a drizzle of aged balsamic into a perfect salty-sweet ending.
Discovering the Maserati Factory
No trip to Motor Valley would be complete without delving into the world of automotive manufacturing. I recommend visiting the Viale Ciro Menotti factory, which Maserati has called home since the 1930s. It offers an up-close perspective on how these incredible vehicles are made.
Even for someone like me, who might not consider myself a car expert, seeing the meticulous craftsmanship involved in building a car like the Maserati MC20 supercar was fascinating. Watching workers handcraft these machines just a few feet away was an inspiring experience.
The tour provides a view of the entire assembly line, from the raw frame to the finished car being prepared for shipment. You also get to see the engine lab and the areas where the cars undergo thorough testing. A highlight for me was witnessing the high-tech painting process, managed by large robotic arms.
Before or after the factory tour, you can explore the Maserati showroom. It’s a great place to admire the latest models and perhaps pick up some branded merchandise as a souvenir of your visit.
Wandering Mercato Albinelli
Food markets are always a favorite discovery when I travel, offering an authentic glimpse into local life and cuisine. Mercato Albinelli, a large covered market in the heart of Modena, is no exception. It’s a vibrant spot to immerse yourself in the region’s specialties.
Inside, you’ll find stalls overflowing with local delights like beautifully displayed prosciutto, large wheels of Parmesan cheese, and freshly made tortellini. It’s a visual feast and a genuine taste of Emilia-Romagna.
One shop not to miss is Je Suis Marisa, which sells stunning fresh pasta creations. The colorful pasta cases, often decorated with flowers, are almost too pretty to eat. You can buy some to take home and cook yourself, or enjoy a portion of tortellini right there.
Don’t forget to try the sandwiches from Bar Schiavoni, located just outside the market. The sausage sandwich, in particular, is noteworthy.
Where to Eat and Drink
Casual Dining at Franceschetta 58
While securing a reservation at the world-renowned Osteria Francescana, a three-Michelin-star establishment, is a goal for many, its more accessible sibling, Franceschetta 58, offers a delightful alternative. This family bistro provides a more relaxed dining experience.
You can choose from two tasting menus, one focusing on seasonal ingredients and the other celebrating classic dishes, or opt for à la carte ordering. A must-try from their menu is the Emilia Burger, made with a blend of beef and pork sausage, topped with Parmesan and a unique green sauce infused with balsamic vinegar.
Modern Twists at Prospero
Prospero offers an interesting blend of traditional and contemporary. Here, classic local dishes are given a modern interpretation, such as tortellini served in a lemongrass-infused broth. The kitchen also adds creative touches like pistachio cream dots to the pasta.
I particularly enjoyed the asparagus carbonara, which provided a fresh take on a beloved Italian dish. The restaurant also curates excellent playlists, which you can even find on Spotify.
Exceptional Gelato at Bloom
I believe Modena might just be home to some of the best gelato in all of Italy, and Bloom is a major reason why. This establishment serves all-natural gelato and sorbets featuring inventive and delightful flavor combinations.
You might find options like grapefruit marmalade, juniper-infused peach jam, or candied Sicilian tangerines. The quality and creativity of their offerings are truly outstanding.
Natural Wines at Archer
For a cozy and romantic evening, Archer is a fantastic natural wine bar. It boasts an impressive selection of wines from Italy and neighboring countries like France and Slovenia, perfectly complemented by a curated menu of small plates.
Enjoying a glass of Chianti with a simple plate of anchovies, butter, and toast while overlooking the Ghirlandina bell tower is a wonderful experience.
Lambrusco Heritage at Cleto Chiarli
Cleto Chiarli holds the distinction of being the oldest winery in Emilia-Romagna and was the first to commercialize the region’s famous Lambrusco. You can experience their heritage firsthand.
They offer two distinct varieties: the drier, pink-hued Lambrusco di Sorbana, and the sweeter, purple Lambrusco Grasparossa. You can visit their location in Modena or at their winery just outside the city.
Classic Charm at Cesare
Cesare is a quaint tavern that transports you back in time, having been established in 1934. The ambiance, with its wooden furniture, retro paneling, and vintage photographs, creates a wonderfully authentic dive bar feel.
However, the cocktails here are anything but ordinary. The “Lola Love,” made with vodka, passionfruit, vanilla, and a lychee foam with lemongrass, is a particularly delicious choice.
Where to Stay
Renaissance Elegance at Hotel Rua Frati 48
Hotel Rua Frati 48 is a truly special place, housed within a Renaissance-era palace. Staying here feels like stepping into a royal setting, with its multiple beautifully appointed common spaces and palatial guest rooms.
The hotel features enormous jacuzzi tubs and an extensive breakfast spread. A unique offering I appreciated was the “pillow menu,” providing a variety of options to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.
Chic Comfort at Hotel Cervetta 5
Nestled on a charming street filled with sidewalk cafés and just steps from Piazza Grande, Hotel Cervetta 5 is a recently renovated boutique hotel in the heart of historic Modena. Its 22 rooms are decorated with chic design and luxury furnishings.
You’ll find all the comforts of home here, along with fresh pastries available in the morning. It’s a perfect base for exploring the historic center of the city.
Luxury Countryside Retreat at Casa Maria Luigia
From the acclaimed chef Massimo Bottura, Casa Maria Luigia is a luxurious country house hotel situated on the outskirts of Modena. This beautifully restored 18th-century farmhouse offers an exclusive and intimate experience with only 12 unique rooms.
The hotel is exquisitely decorated with a blend of vintage and contemporary furnishings, showcasing pieces from the couple’s impressive art collection. A delightful aspect of staying here is the access to the kitchen, where the team provides guests with salads, snacks, and freshly baked bread throughout the day.
The region around Modena offers a rich blend of history, culture, and incredible flavors, making it a destination that truly engages all your senses and leaves you with lasting memories.
