My first solo adventure in Europe was an absolute dream, a gentle introduction to solo travel that left me buzzing with newfound confidence and a heart full of memories. I carefully chose countries known for their safety and welcoming atmosphere, deciding on a beautiful circuit through Slovenia, Austria, and a few charming corners of Italy, including a delightful stop in Verona where I met up with an old friend.
Slovenian Charms
Slovenia truly captured my heart. The people are wonderfully kind and possess a quiet grace. While the older generation sometimes offered curious glances and inquiries about my origins, these interactions were always polite, free from any negativity. It’s a country that feels incredibly safe, even as dusk settles.
My journey began in Ljubljana, a city that sparkles, especially when adorned for Christmas. The magical Christmas market in Preseren Square was a highlight. The decorations were simply breathtaking, and thankfully, it wasn’t as overwhelming as some of the bustling markets I’ve encountered elsewhere. Walking through Ljubljana at night felt utterly secure and enchanting.
Later, I based myself in Ljubljana for four days, using it as a launchpad for incredible day trips. Trieste, Piran, and the Postojna Caves were all on the agenda. Trieste and Piran share a similar coastal allure, but Piran, with its unbelievably charming streets and fewer crowds, had a special edge for me. I also ventured to Skofja Loka, a captivating medieval town. Hiking around its historic paths was like stepping back in time, surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
New Year’s Eve in Slovenia was pure magic. I found myself back in Preseren Square in Ljubljana, ready to ring in the new year. For a taste of homey comfort, I indulged in Burek Olimpija, a pastry that quickly became my go-to treat during my stay.
After the festivities, my adventure continued in Bohinj, where I spent another delightful four days. Settling into my Airbnb in a quaint village, I immediately set out towards the breathtaking Lake Bohinj. I was so fortunate that early January brought crisp air but no snow, making my initial trek along the path towards the lake truly spectacular. The mountain vistas unfolding before me were simply awe-inspiring.
Upon reaching the lake, I couldn’t resist the call to explore its perimeter on foot. My goal was to reach Ukanc by late afternoon. As the day wore on, darkness descended rather quickly. By 5 PM, the forest path became challenging to navigate, and I needed my phone’s flashlight to guide me. Reaching Ukanc just in time felt like a small victory! From there, I hopped on a bus, but alas, it missed my stop and left me a little lost. As I considered walking back, a kind Slovenian couple in their car offered me a ride, bringing me safely back to my accommodation. It was a small reminder of the kindness of strangers.
The remainder of my time in Bohinj was filled with exhilarating experiences. I spent days skiing at the Vogel ski center, though my first attempt at skiing resulted in quite a few tumbles and some bruised fingers! I also went horseback riding, which offered yet another magnificent perspective of the surrounding mountains as we rode towards Lake Bohinj. The sheer beauty of this region is something I’ll never forget.
My Slovenian journey concluded with three days in the picturesque Lake Bled. Of course, no visit is complete without indulging in the legendary Bled Cream Cake at Kavarna Park. It’s a dessert so divine, I’m still dreaming about it! As if on cue, the snow began to fall gently as I walked back from the cafe, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the scene.
The next day was dedicated to exploring Lake Bled and its surroundings. I took a hike up to the Ojstica viewpoint, offering a stunning panoramic view of the island church, now dusted with pristine snow. Much of the day was spent wandering between charming local cafes, savoring the atmosphere and the delightful pastries.
My final day in Slovenia was a sweet farewell, spent indulging in more delectable cakes and copious amounts of coffee at confectionery Zima. It was the perfect, leisurely end to an unforgettable trip.
Austrian Elegance
My journey then led me to Austria, a country of imperial grandeur. Vienna, in particular, lived up to its reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities. The public transportation system is nothing short of brilliant; buses and trams ran like clockwork, connecting every part of the city with seamless efficiency. I could easily spend days lost in museums, and I dedicated a good four hours to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, marveling at masterpieces by the old masters. The sheer artistry on display was overwhelming in the best possible way.
The Christmas markets in Vienna are legendary, and I couldn’t resist experiencing the one at Rathausplatz. Warming up with mulled wine and enjoying a classic schnitzel felt like pure indulgence. Later, the opulent beauty of the State Hall took my breath away.
A spontaneous day trip to Hallstatt was a must, even with the crowds. Yes, it’s a popular spot, but the reason is undeniable – the views are absolutely breathtaking, a postcard-perfect scene come to life.
Italian Delights
My brief foray into Italy was equally charming. Verona, visited on Christmas Day, offered a quieter experience. While most shops were closed, my friend and I found a cozy cafe where I savored what might have been the most delicious gelato I’ve ever tasted. It’s the little moments like these, discovering incredible flavors in unexpected places, that make travel so special. My experiences in Italy always leave me wanting more, each visit revealing new layers of its rich culture and culinary wonders.
The people in Austria, while sometimes appearing a bit reserved or even gruff, were always helpful when approached. Similar to Slovenia, I did notice some curious stares, but these were always accompanied by a willingness to assist, making the experience positive.
What are some of the safest European countries for solo female travelers?
Based on my experience and extensive research, Slovenia, Austria, and many parts of Italy are excellent choices. These countries are renowned for their low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and generally welcoming attitudes towards tourists. It’s always wise to research specific cities and neighborhoods, but these nations offer a solid foundation for a safe and enjoyable solo trip.
How can I ensure I feel safe while traveling alone?
Feeling safe is paramount. I always stick to well-lit, populated areas, especially at night. Researching local customs and basic phrases can also be incredibly helpful. Trusting your intuition is key; if a situation feels uncomfortable, it’s best to remove yourself from it. I also make sure to share my itinerary with a trusted friend or family member back home.
What should I pack for a winter trip to these regions?
Layering is essential for winter travel in Europe. Pack warm base layers, a fleece or sweater, and a waterproof and windproof outer coat. Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes or boots are a must, along with warm socks, gloves, a scarf, and a hat. Don’t forget a portable charger for your phone, as you’ll likely be using it for navigation and photos.
Returning home, my fingers were a bit bruised from my skiing adventure, my legs were certainly stronger from all the exploring, and my mind was filled with a treasure trove of happy memories. This first solo European escapade was truly a turning point, and I know, without a doubt, that I’ll be embarking on many more solo journeys in the future!
