Discover the magic of Florence from a historic palazzo that feels miles away from the city’s energy, yet is just a short walk from its most iconic sights. This exceptional hotel offers a unique blend of centuries-old character and modern luxury, making it a truly memorable place to stay in Italy. Imagine stepping into a former noble residence, where every corner tells a story, and then finding yourself surrounded by extensive gardens and world-class amenities.
A Grand Historic Setting
The Four Seasons Florence is housed in a magnificent 16th-century palazzo, once the private home of Florentine nobles. This sense of history is evident from the moment you enter, with a beautifully appointed lobby that feels like a museum in itself. The architecture and design details throughout the property showcase its rich past, offering a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from contemporary hotels.
You’ll notice the meticulous preservation of historical elements, from the soaring ceilings to the intricate paneling. Even the hallways evoke the feeling of walking through a grand historical estate. This attention to preserving the building’s heritage creates an immersive experience, allowing you to step back in time while still enjoying all the comforts of a luxury hotel in 2026.
Off the main lobby, you’ll find a charming chapel. This space can be used for intimate private dinners or small ceremonies, adding another layer of historical significance and potential for memorable occasions during your stay.
Exceptional Room Experience
Our accommodation in a Gallery Suite, approximately 646 square feet, provided a spacious and beautifully appointed retreat. While it functioned more like a junior suite, the absence of a separate living area didn’t detract from its grandeur. The room masterfully combined historic features with modern Four Seasons standards.
The generously sized room included a comfortable king-size bed, a plush sitting area with a couch and chair, a work desk, and a television. What truly impressed was the incredibly high ceiling, likely exceeding 15 feet, adorned with original wood paneling that spoke volumes of the building’s past. You could spend time just admiring the craftsmanship.
For refreshments, a minibar offered a selection of drinks and snacks, alongside an illy espresso machine. Complimentary bottled water was also provided. We were also greeted with a lovely welcome amenity featuring fresh fruit, sweets, and sparkling wine, setting a delightful tone for our visit.
The room’s windows faced the street, and we experienced no noise disturbances, which was a welcome surprise. Even with its historic structure, the room offered all the modern amenities you would expect, with twice-daily housekeeping ensuring a consistently comfortable environment. While Wi-Fi was generally reliable, occasional spotty service was understandable given the building’s age.
A Surprising Urban Oasis
The Expansive Gardens
One of the most striking features of this city hotel is its sprawling 10-acre private garden. It’s highly unusual to find such an extensive outdoor space in the heart of a major European city. This green oasis offers something for everyone, from beautifully manicured lawns and mature trees to charming statues, serene ponds, and inviting gazebos.
You can wander through varied landscapes, discover hidden art installations, or simply find a peaceful bench to relax. For families, there are designated play areas for children, making it a versatile space for all ages. It truly feels like a secret escape from the city’s pace.
The gardens provide a tranquil backdrop and a refreshing contrast to the urban surroundings. It’s a place where you can easily forget you are in a busy city, offering a sense of spaciousness and natural beauty that is rarely found in such central locations.
State-of-the-Art Fitness Facilities
Despite the historic setting, the hotel boasts an incredibly impressive gymnasium, housed in its own separate building within the garden complex. Spread across three floors, this fitness center is a testament to Four Seasons’ commitment to providing top-tier facilities.
The first floor is dedicated to a vast array of cardio equipment, while the second floor is equipped with a comprehensive selection of free weights and strength training machines. This ensures you have ample options for a thorough workout, regardless of your fitness preferences.
Downstairs, the basement level features changing rooms, a sauna and steam room, and a relaxation area. This entire facility is connected underground to the spa, further enhancing the wellness offerings available to guests.
The Serene Spa and Pool Area
Adjacent to the gym, across the garden, you’ll find the hotel’s spa, another impressive facility designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. While I didn’t personally indulge in treatments during my visit, the setup appeared to be as high-end as you would expect from this brand.
The property also features a beautiful outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, perfect for a refreshing dip during warmer months. Even though it was early April and not quite pool season, the area looked inviting, with comfortable seating surrounding the water. A poolside bar is also available, typically opening with the summer season, offering drinks and light fare.
This pool area, like much of the hotel, offers a delightful surprise – a sense of resort-like tranquility that you wouldn’t typically associate with a city hotel.
Culinary Delights
Il Palagio Michelin-Starred Dining
For a truly exquisite dining experience, Il Palagio, the hotel’s signature Michelin-starred restaurant, is a must-visit. Open for breakfast and then again for dinner, the restaurant offers a refined atmosphere, with spacious indoor seating and an outdoor terrace perfect for enjoying meals during the warmer seasons.
Breakfast is served daily and provides a wonderful start to your day. If you book through the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program, breakfast is included, which is a fantastic perk.
The breakfast buffet is generous, featuring a wide array of cold cuts, cheeses, fresh fruits, yogurts, cereals, breads, and pastries. Several hot options are also available, and you can order eggs and other dishes a la carte from the menu. The cappuccinos were exceptionally good, and the freshly squeezed orange juice was a delightful accompaniment.
For dinner, Il Palagio presents a creative and beautifully executed menu. We enjoyed an amuse-bouche and freshly baked bread to start. Our culinary journey included exquisitely prepared dishes such as marinated baby pink prawns with shellfish cream, Livornese cockerel agnolotti, and a perfectly cooked sea bream main course. The dessert, a caramelized puff pastry with rhubarb compote, was a sweet and satisfying conclusion, followed by delicate petit fours.
The Atrium Bar Experience
The Atrium Bar serves as the hotel’s social hub, offering a lovely space to enjoy coffee, cocktails, or light bites throughout the day. It’s particularly inviting in the evenings, especially when live music fills the air. The ambiance created by live music here is truly special, offering a perfect spot to unwind.
The bar also boasts a beautiful outdoor terrace, ideal for enjoying a drink al fresco during the afternoon. The bar menu features an all-day dining selection and a unique list of craft cocktails, including some memorable house specialties.
We particularly enjoyed their inventive take on the classic negroni, accompanied by delicious bar snacks. It’s a sophisticated yet relaxed setting for socializing or enjoying a quiet moment.
When considering a visit in 2026, planning your dining reservations, especially for Il Palagio, is highly recommended due to its popularity.
Outstanding Service
Four Seasons hotels are consistently recognized for their exceptional service, and the staff at the Four Seasons Florence were no exception. They exuded a palpable sense of pride in their work, demonstrating a perfect balance of professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine warmth. This personable approach made our stay feel incredibly welcoming and well-cared for, adding significantly to the overall remarkable experience.
The staff’s dedication to guest satisfaction was evident in every interaction, from the seamless check-in process to the personalized recommendations they offered. Their deep understanding of the hotel’s history and the local area further enhanced our exploration of Florence.
We found the concierge to be particularly helpful in suggesting personalized itineraries and making reservations. This level of service truly elevates the stay from simply visiting a hotel to enjoying a deeply enriched travel experience. It’s the kind of attentive care that makes you want to return.
For families like ours visiting Florence with children, the staff were incredibly accommodating and thoughtful. They ensured that both Lily and Ethan felt comfortable and entertained, which is always a priority when traveling with young ones. Whether it was offering child-friendly food options at Il Palagio or suggesting activities in the garden suitable for their ages, their efforts were greatly appreciated.
The combined elements of historic charm, luxurious amenities, beautiful surroundings, and truly exceptional service make the Four Seasons Florence one of my favorite city hotels anywhere in Europe. It offers a unique and deeply satisfying experience for any traveler seeking comfort, history, and a touch of elegance.
