After a day spent exploring the historical wonders of Rome, finding the perfect spot for a relaxing drink is essential. From hidden speakeasies to lively terraces, this city offers countless options to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. You can start your evening with a classic Aperol Spritz or a local beer, just like the Romans do, and let your footsteps guide you to your next favorite bar.
Charming Speakeasy Experiences
Club Derriere
For a truly unique experience, I found Club Derriere by going through a wardrobe in the back of Osteria delle Copelle. It felt like stepping back in time. The cocktails were excellent, and the bartenders were just as impressive.
If you’re unsure where to find the facilities, a discreet bookcase on the wall is the key. It’s a fun little surprise that adds to the clandestine feel of the place.
Jerry Thomas Speakeasy
Gaining entry to Jerry Thomas requires a bit of detective work. You’ll need to find the password on their website first, which can be a fun little game before you even arrive. Once inside, the atmosphere transports you straight to the roaring twenties with its dark, smoky ambiance and period-appropriate decor.
The small annual membership fee feels more like a cover charge for an exclusive club, and I can confirm that the quality of their cocktails makes it entirely worthwhile. It’s a proper treat for the senses.
Hip Hop and Chic Vibes
Bar del Fico
Just a short walk from the lively Piazza Navona, Bar del Fico offers an open-air setting with a great terrace. I really enjoyed the music here, as it’s usually filled with hip-hop tunes. It’s a fantastic spot to meet new people or just relax with a glass of wine while listening to some familiar beats.
I particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, which made it easy to strike up conversations. It’s the kind of place where you can just feel the good energy.
Stravinskij Bar
Located within the elegant Hotel de Russie, Stravinskij Bar offers a refined setting for cocktails. It’s beautifully situated in their cobblestone courtyard, and I’ve heard it’s famous for having one of the best martinis in the city. The soft lighting and comfortable armchairs create a perfect ambiance for a romantic evening.
This is definitely a place to save for a special occasion or when you want to feel a little bit pampered. The surroundings alone are worth the visit.
Old Classics and Local Hangouts
Cul de Sac
As one of Rome’s oldest wine bars, Cul de Sac opened its doors in 1977 and boasts an impressive selection of over 1,500 bottles, presented in a menu as thick as a phone book. For a wine bar, the prices are quite reasonable, making it an ideal spot for an aperitif or a light lunch. I appreciated the sheer variety available.
There’s so much to explore on the menu; it’s easy to lose track of time just browsing the extensive wine list. It’s a true haven for wine lovers.
Freni e Frizioni
Freni e Frizioni, which translates to “Brakes and Clutches,” successfully blends the best elements of a dive bar with a classy atmosphere. The bar occupies the space of a former mechanic workshop, adding a unique industrial-chic vibe. During warmer months, the bar becomes so popular that crowds often spill onto the street.
I make it a point to always check out their “drink of the week,” which is freshly concocted by the bartenders. It’s a great way to discover something new and exciting.
Oasi della Birra
Experiencing an Italian aperitivo is a must, and Oasi della Birra offers a truly authentic taste of this tradition. I highly recommend trying to get there before 8:00 PM to enjoy one of their delicious cocktails paired with their extensive evening buffet. It’s so generous that for many, it replaces their entire dinner.
If you’re still hungry for more, their à la carte menu includes a selection of salads, meat and cheese platters, and a few hot dishes. It’s a comprehensive culinary experience.
Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fà
This cozy spot in the Trastevere neighborhood is a favorite among locals, and I can see why. It’s lined with some of the best craft beer selections in the city. The laid-back vibe is perfect for settling in at the bar and sampling some Italian microbrews. I often find international craft beers sneak onto the menu as well, which are definitely worth trying.
It’s a relaxed environment where you can truly appreciate good beer without any pretense. Ethan, my youngest, absolutely loved the pretzels they served as a snack here, which was a nice touch for him.
Necci dal 1924
Only in Rome would you find a neighborhood bar that used to be a gelato shop. Necci dal 1924 has transformed into a beloved local hangout with a laid-back patio that’s always packed on weekends. I was pleased to find they still serve Aperol Spritz for a very reasonable price of €5.
Life certainly feels pretty good here, enjoying a classic Italian drink in such a warm, local setting. It’s moments like these that I cherish.
Diverse Nightlife Options
Coming Out
For a relaxed vibe, casual day drinks, and great music, Coming Out is the place to be. Situated in the liberal and artistic Monti neighborhood, close to the Colosseum, this bar is a perfect spot for live music events and dance nights. Everyone is genuinely welcome here.
It fosters a friendly atmosphere, and I’ve seen it host some fantastic local artists. It’s a refreshing change of pace from some of the more tourist-heavy spots.
Micca Club
Micca Club is known for its vibrant burlesque shows and retro vinyl nights, featuring weekly events and alternative DJ sets that keep the energy high. From hip cabaret performances to lively cafe dinner shows, this club offers an amusing and engaging experience that often has you dancing in the aisles. I strongly suggest grabbing your tickets in advance to ensure you get a spot.
The unique blend of performance and music makes for a memorable night out that’s unlike anything else. It’s a real sensory delight.
Caffe Propaganda
Just around the corner from the magnificent Colosseum, Caffe Propaganda is a bistro-style bar that offers a perfect respite after a long day of sightseeing. The menu, curated by talented mixologists, sets a high standard for cocktails in Rome, featuring surprising creations served with delightful small bites. It’s a great place to recharge and enjoy expertly crafted drinks.
I found their take on classic cocktails to be particularly inventive. It’s a sophisticated yet relaxed spot that’s ideal for a post-exploration treat.
Black Market Monti
Tucked away between the well-known tourist attractions, Black Market Monti feels like a vintage bar, reminiscent of a chic basement suite in a friend’s home. With multiple rooms filled with comfortable, plush furniture and cool artwork, it serves as a wonderful escape after a busy day exploring Rome. Checking their online schedule for upcoming live eclectic music performances is highly recommended.
The eclectic décor and laid-back atmosphere make it a unique place to unwind. Lily, my daughter, was fascinated by the different nooks and crannies, pretending they were secret passages.
Salotto 42
When in Rome, you might want a cocktail that’s as Instagram-worthy as it is delicious. Salotto 42, adorned with beautiful florals and ivy climbing its entrance, is an upscale bar celebrated for its delectable drinks, tasty finger foods, and cool music selection. It’s a spot that appeals to both the eyes and the palate.
The presentation of their drinks is truly a work of art. It makes for a visually appealing experience that complements the quality of the beverages.
Co.So
While the Pigneto neighborhood is generally known for its more low-key cocktail bars, Co.So. (Cocktails & Social) stands out as a swanky alternative that adds a bit of pizzazz to your evenings. Co.So. keeps its guests entertained with novel touches like menus delivered in Manila envelopes, bubble wrap coasters, an all-you-can-eat popcorn machine, and a generous supply of gummy bears to snack on while you enjoy your cocktails.
The playful elements here are a lot of fun, and they certainly make for a memorable visit. The creativity in their presentation is remarkable.
Zuma
If you’re hoping to spot Italian A-listers or want to don your most luxurious designs, Zuma is the place to be. Situated above Fendi’s flagship store, Zuma is a sophisticated two-floor contemporary Japanese restaurant offering stunning rooftop terrace views. It’s a destination where both the food and wine flow continuously, promising a high-end dining and drinking experience.
The panoramic views from the rooftop are simply breathtaking, especially as the sun begins to set. It provides a glamorous backdrop for an unforgettable evening, and Michael really appreciated the contemporary Japanese cuisine.
Exploring Rome’s bar scene is a journey in itself, offering a diverse range of atmospheres and experiences to suit every taste. Whether you’re seeking a quiet corner for conversation or a lively spot to dance the night away, you’ll find it here.
