My recent trip to Lake Como was an absolute dream, filled with breathtaking scenery and charming towns. It’s a destination that truly lives up to its reputation for stunning beauty, with the dramatic mountains meeting the serene waters. Beyond the visuals, the region offers a rich cultural experience, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere. While it can seem like an expensive place to visit, I discovered that with a little planning, it’s entirely possible to enjoy its magic without breaking the bank. I’ve put together some insights from my eight-day exploration to help you make the most of your own Italian adventure.
Getting to Lake Como
Navigating Flights to Northern Italy
Lake Como is located about an hour north of Milan, which makes flying into one of its airports the most logical starting point. However, flying directly from the United States into Milan can be quite costly. Based on my experience, a much more budget-friendly approach involves flying into Paris. Airlines like Norse Atlantic Airways or Frenchbee offer very competitive fares from cities like Los Angeles to Paris (CDG or ORY). I managed to snag a roundtrip ticket for around $500, which felt like an incredible deal. While these budget airlines do charge extra for bags and meals, the overall savings are significant.
Once you land in Paris, you have a couple of options. You can choose to spend a few days exploring the French capital, or you can head straight to your next flight. For the onward journey to Milan, I highly recommend taking an EasyJet flight. These flights are incredibly affordable, often costing around $50 if booked in advance. The flight itself is just over an hour, and I found EasyJet to be a reliable and efficient way to travel across Europe. It’s often quicker and sometimes even cheaper than taking the train, making it a great option for getting around.
It’s worth noting that EasyJet flights can sometimes experience delays. To mitigate any potential stress, it’s wise to book your flights with a buffer period between them, rather than scheduling them too tightly together. This simple precaution can save you from a cascade of travel disruptions.
Renting a Car in Lake Como
Affordable Car Rentals
Upon arriving in Milan, you’ll need to make your way to Como. While trains and ride-sharing services like Bolt are available, I found renting a car to be the most practical and surprisingly economical choice for exploring the lake area. In Italy, car insurance is often included in the rental price, significantly reducing the overall cost. I rented a basic, inexpensive car for eight days and was amazed that it only cost me about $7 per day, including insurance. My total for over a week, with all fees included, was around $120, which felt like an absolute steal.
Having a car gave me the freedom to navigate the various towns around the lake at my own pace, without relying solely on the ferry schedules. I used Hertz for my rental, but Sixt is another reputable company worth considering. It’s advisable to avoid smaller, local rental agencies that might have poor reviews, as these can sometimes be tourist traps. Sticking with well-known brands like Hertz or Sixt provides greater reliability and peace of mind, given their international presence and established track records. Also, keep an eye out for summer deals or discounts on their websites; I managed to get a 30% discount on my Hertz rental by checking their site for promotions.
Choosing Your Lake Como Accommodation
Balancing Budget and Splurge
I like to break up my stays when I travel internationally, typically splitting my time between Airbnbs and more upscale hotels. This strategy allows me to save money on flights and transportation, which I can then allocate to more comfortable lodging. If you’re looking to be more budget-conscious, I still recommend splitting your stay between different Airbnbs. Many places in Lake Como don’t have the hefty cleaning fees that are common in the United States, making them quite affordable.
For the first part of my trip, I stayed in the northern part of the lake, which offered excellent access to many beautiful towns. For the latter half, I moved south, closer to Como City. After arriving in Milan, a direct drive to your Airbnb is usually the most convenient option if you’ve rented a car. I particularly enjoyed staying in Lenno during my visit. It’s a fantastic location, close to everything you might need, and it served as a perfect base for exploring the surrounding areas. If you’re not traveling by car, ensure your accommodation is within walking distance to a ferry stop, as the ferries are a primary mode of transport around the lake.
Even with a car, I found myself using the ferry quite often to cross the lake. Lenno is also ideal for any Star Wars fans, as it’s just a short distance from Villa del Balbianello, the stunning villa featured in the Star Wars prequels. Booking tickets in advance for this attraction is a must. From the Lenno ferry dock, it’s easy to reach major towns like Bellagio, Menaggio, Varenna, and Tremezzo. While Tremezzo is home to luxurious spots like the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, it’s an extremely expensive place to stay. My choice to stay in Lenno provided proximity to these high-end destinations without the prohibitive price tag. Lenno itself has many local restaurants with very affordable food and drinks – I found coffee for as little as two euros and meals for under ten euros, making it one of my favorite places to stay. The Airbnb I found in Lenno, right on the water, cost about $180 per night.
After a few days in the north, I headed south. I chose to stay in Cernobbio, a wonderfully charming and quieter town compared to the bustling tourism of the north. You can find Airbnbs in Cernobbio, Laglio, Moltrasio, or even Como City if you prefer a more urban environment. The tranquility of Cernobbio after a few busy days of sightseeing was very welcome.
Experiencing Lake Como Hotels on a Budget
As someone who enjoys experiencing hotels, I always like to explore the options in the area. If the nightly rates seem too high, a great tip is to visit the hotel bars. Many of the hotels around Lake Como are like castles, offering a taste of luxury without the commitment of a full stay. This allows you to enjoy the ambiance and incredible views at a much more accessible price point. I found some truly stunning hotels with breathtaking vistas.
For those seeking a five-star experience without the matching price tag, Hotel Villa Relais Vittoria is an excellent option. It offers great food and views and was under $400 a night when I visited. It’s a wonderful way to get a feel for the grandeur of the lakeside hotels.
Finding Affordable Eats in Lake Como
Savoring Local Flavors
My top recommendation for finding delicious and affordable food in Lake Como is to seek out quieter, less tourist-heavy towns. Places like Bellagio and Tremezzo, while beautiful, tend to have higher prices due to their popularity. On the other hand, smaller towns such as Lenno and Cernobbio offer fantastic flavors at much more reasonable prices. I found it beneficial to have my main meals at charming cafes in these quieter spots and then perhaps grab a lighter bite in the more bustling tourist areas if needed.
One meal that stood out was a truffle pasta I had in Cernobbio at a small, inviting restaurant. It cost only $14 and was easily one of the most memorable pasta dishes of my entire trip. You can find incredible value and authentic tastes by venturing just slightly off the beaten path.
Practical Tips for Your Lake Como Visit
Embracing the Local Weather
Being by a lake means the weather can be quite unpredictable. Rain is always a possibility, so it’s wise to pack an umbrella. Conditions can change rapidly from sunny to stormy. It’s best to be prepared for anything, as weather apps aren’t always the most accurate for this region.
Utilizing the Ferry System
The ferry is the most cost-effective and convenient way to travel across the lake. Plan your journeys and try to purchase your tickets in advance whenever possible. The lines can get quite long, especially during peak season, and sometimes tickets for popular routes can sell out. Being mindful of this and preparing ahead can make your travel much smoother.
Timing Your Visit
The peak tourist season, and consequently the most expensive time to visit Lake Como, runs from June through September. If your schedule allows, consider visiting in May or during September and October. I visited at the end of May, just as the summer season was beginning, and it was already quite crowded. I can only imagine how busy it gets in the height of summer. Traveling outside the peak months can nearly halve the rates for accommodation and flights, making it a much more affordable experience. For 2026, aiming for these shoulder months will offer a great balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
Visiting Lake Como offers an unforgettable experience, combining natural splendor with rich culture. By planning your travel and accommodation wisely, you can truly savor this Italian gem without overspending.
